in 2020 my lab quit Microsoft Word and began writing in R Markdown, an open-source document-publishing system that facilitates a clear, permanent link between statements in text (scientific prose) and the code producing analyses and visualizations supporting those statements (scientific analyses)

Last night’s observation was of the nebula Sh2-140, which illustrates two ways to see a molecular cloud: the dust in it hides myriad background stars in the lower half of the image; and a massive young star that formed from it illuminates its edge with ionising light, making the gas there glow. 🔭🧪

Important paper that's going on the 2nd Plague Pandemic bibliography even though it's not about plague: He et al., "Ancient DNA implicates Salmonella Paratyphi C as a candidate pathogen in a thirteenth-century East Asian epidemic." Unfortunate omission: Hymes's historical work on 13thC epidemics!

Still notably marked positive pressure signal over Greenland for late winter (February), and southward shifted Atlantic storm track in the latest C3S seasonal forecasts. It's a super consistent signal given it's multi-model mean, across all modeling systems, meaning hundreds of ensemble members.
