Hey, want to learn a Lake District history fact? Did you know you can sometimes tell where Norse people lived in the Lake District because of local place names? Names ending in –by such as Ireby mean village. Those ending in –thwaite, like Satterthwaite, mean clearing.

This is what wild camping is to me, but it seems less common in the age of cheap gear. Minimal footprint, gear all within reach of the tent and even a camo net so I'm not even a temporary blot on the landscape visually... but set up somewhere almost nobody will pass anyway! Then vanished by sunrise!
