Dark skies, the Milky Way, and thousands of people exploring the Universe. We had a great weekend at the Great Basin Astronomy Festival, sharing telescopes, science talks, and astronomy with visitors from across the country. Thanks to Great Basin National Park for hosting.

Fantastic weekend at Great Basin National Park . I provided tours of the telescope and ops area. 12 groups, 180 visitors, and a lecture on Saturday for 22 visitors. Ran ops each night and collected exoplanet data. #astronomy 🔭

Great night under the Bortle 1 skies of Great Basin National Park last night. The rangers might go a little overboard with the red lights for the Astronomy Festival, but safety first! Modified Sony Alpha 7 III, Sony FE 14mm f/1.8 lens, 6s exposure at ISO 1600. #astrophotography

Attended a talk by Great Basin Observatory Director Jerry Hilburn and toured the facility. It is the only research observatory in a national park. They offer free online classes for students wanting to learn how to do astronomy research. HS, college, anyone!science.greatbasinobservatory.org

Great night at the Great Basin National Park Astronomy Festival last night. Patchy clouds were annoying, but didn’t prevent us from showing hundreds of people the wonders of the darkest sky in any National Park on the lower 48. The Milky Way was a stunning overhead spectacle! #astrophotography

Had to hike up to almost 11,000 ft on the Wheeler Peak summit trail to find aspen showing fall color. Last night’s star gazing was obscured by clouds. Tonight looks better for the Great Basin National Park Astronomy Festival.

I am driving Highway 50, the Loneliest Road in America, to the Great Basin National Park Astronomy Festival today. A Nevada state trooper stopped me and had me move off the road for an oncoming oversized vehicle. It was as wide as the entire two lane road!

Last month, we teamed up with Lassen Volcanic National Park for Dark Skies at Lassen, a weekend of stargazing and science! We had great weather, beautiful views, and lots of astronomy throughout the weekend. Join us at Sequoia or Great Basin this weekend for similar events!
