Sunday birdwatching at St Aidans. Encountered three mutations of redwings flying over the hawthorn trees and a curfew of curlews feeding at the pasture. 7 whooper swans were reported in the main lake. Other highlights: red kite, great crested grebe, great and cattle egret, shoveler, and meadow pipit

The countryside was almost glowing in the sunshine yesterday. Trees are just on the turn here. Mostly green but some yellows and oranges. Lots of hawthorn with a red haze. Bright red creepers in urban spots. Saw 10 red kite from the train window.

🌳 There are somewhere in the region of 40,000 to 45,000 ringforts scattered across the Irish countryside, and most people drive past them without a second glance. They do not look like much: a circle of earthen bank, often with a ditch outside it and a hawthorn or two growing on top.
