The world's largest penguin colony has lost its title 🐧 A remote volcanic island near Antarctica has lost over half a million chinstrap penguins since 2011, a decline so steep it could see the species reassessed as 'Endangered'. 🧵1/2

The Arctic & Alaska September climate recap now posted on the Alaska and Arctic Climate newsletter. Another warm month in western Siberia & eastern Canada. On Substack and Beehiv. #Arctic #akwx #Climate alaskaclimate.substack.com/p/september-... alaska-arctic-climate.beehiiv.com/p/september-...
My take on the @nobelprize.org for Francis Halzen and @icecubeneutrino.bsky.social: beyond being a huge accomplishment for the individual & team, a win for US basic research, the National Science Foundation, US Antarctic Program and the 70 years of Operation Deep Freeze.
Everybody wants a bit of Antarctic krill: whales, seals, penguins... and humans 🦐 Krill are heroes of the ocean ecosystem, who also sequester carbon. Now, international negotiators are on their way to Hobart, decide how the Southern Ocean and the permissions for fishing there are managed...
🌊 Professors Nathan Bindoff and Delphine Lannuzel from AAPP are at the pre- #COP31 in Fiji, bringing #Antarctic and Southern Ocean #science to the centre of #climate action talks. @utas.edu.au @imas-utas.bsky.social @thesouthernocean.bsky.social
Some shots from Newcomb Hollow today. Some fishing/boating rope among the rubbish I trashed on my afternoon walk (more balloons included 😡), but reckon these bits will be useful in a creative project. Stay tuned… 👀 #OceanDevotion
And they’re off! ✈️ The first of our Twin Otter aircraft and their flight teams have begun the journey south, from Calgary, Canada, all the way to Rothera Research Station in Antarctica to start a new season of polar science! 🇨🇦➡️🇦🇶 (1/3)
Sea ice extent is increasing quickly now in the seas north of Alaska, though most of the growth is still north of 75°N in NSIDC data. The annual sea ice minimum extent in the Chukchi Sea occurred on Sep 15 and in the Beaufort Sea on Sep 20. Neither were a "top ten" lowest. #akwx #Arctic #SeaIce
🌊 We've released a #Saildrone into the wild! Seven metres long, the solar-powered autonomous uncrewed vessel will circumnavigate #Antarctica to collect data on carbon dioxide absorbed by the Southern Ocean – crucial for predicting climate change. SD1092 is the first of four over the next few years.
Arctic-wide sea ice extent has (very likely) reached the minimum for 2026 In NSIDC analysis. At 4.60 million square kilometers (about 2.5 times the size of Alaska), this ties with last year for the 11th lowest since 1979. But that's still lower than every year's min prior to 2007. #Arctic #SeaIce
Shhh, try not to disturb this sleeping crabeater seal as you pass. She's a rare first visitor for Bird Island Research Station (a sub-Antarctic island). They normally prefer pack ice near the Antarctic continent and rarely travel this far north! Girl, that's a big journey. Let 👏 her 👏 nap 👏
Sea ice extent in the Chukchi Sea (northwest of Alaska) is getting close to the lowest of the year, slightly below 2024 but higher than last year in NSIDC data. #akwx #Arctic #SeaIce @zacklabe.com
