Gardening photos, hummingbirds, bee and sometimes cats.
HOLY SHIT! I was sitting here working on my computer & I heard a huge crash I looked out into the garden and... It smashed open our gate from the laneway. Cats were immediately rounded up from the Catio. He's gone now. HE WAS HUGE! We have contacted Block Watch. Bird feeder may be a casualty.
More garden pics. ๐ 1. The starter plants are IN the pollinator garden! Giant hibiscus, salvia, crocosmia, sedge, Agastache (hummingbird mint) the fountain from the front garden that we've had for years. The birds have already been partaking. ๐ 2. Top view. Will be filled in with bulbs & seeds.
New garden photos. ๐ 1. Huge progress on the pollinator garden today. Ready to plant. 2. Trying to do a layout for the plants we have to start it out. Prior to #1. 3. These are the stumps of a huge hibiscus we had for 15+ yrs. It died off - very sad. 4. But it seeded this before it died. 2+ yrs.
New garden pics! ๐ 1. The pollinator garden - the border expanded but is decided. Still a lot to do. Got a few goodies to drop in. 2. Picked up another giant hibiscus - red - $29 bucks a steal. 3. Beautiful coneflowers + yellow Agastache. A bit late but they will be fine. 4. White Straw flower.
More garden pics! ๐ Our back lawn always looks awful. Lawns are water hogs anyhow so who needs ones. We decided to turn part of it into a pollinator garden. You can see the general border layout. I moved my spirea from the main garden into it & my new giant hibiscus into the main garden.
I took a short mental health break at the nursery today - oh oh! ๐ 1. A GIANT hardy hibiscus "Rose Mallow". 8 inch blooms, perennial. $30 - what a steal. 2. White Mandevilla. Tropical, climber. $9.99 - bargain! 3. Cute seagull rug (30% off) + Leo. ๐น 4. New pot filled with hummingbird's faves!
New garden pics! ๐ 1. New allium is fully purply-pink now. I just love this one! 2. The Rose of Sharon Hibiscus has gone crazy! It is so heavy with blooms. 3. Close-up of a Rose of Sharon bloom. They are really gorgeous. 4. Orange strawflowers. Great all summer. Prune them - poof you get more!
New garden pics! ๐ 1. Pink coneflower. I've had this one for awhile - it wasn't doing well looked like it was on its last legs. Surprise! 2. Allium - Millenium. Slowly getting more pink. 3. The Whispurr Pink Catmint bloomed. ๐บ Very delicate tiny pink flowers. 4. White and pink lily.
Chickadees & hummingbirds oh my! This is actually the first video that I took the other day before the hummingbird took a bath. It's so cool to watch the chickadee & hummingbird interact. ๐
Prepare to be dazzled! I saw a chickadee in the bird bath so I went out to get a video & then the hummingbird decided to have a drink & bath as well. I put the fountain there for the birds & hummingbirds - glad it is getting put to good use! โฅ๏ธ
New garden photos. ๐ 1. Casablanca lily opened. Totally pure white. 2. Bluish/purple hibiscus starting open. It has tons of blooms to come. 3. Pink & yellow coneflowers. So many blooms. With the purple fountain grass. 4. Twilight Crimson crocosmia. Really coming along nicely.
Someone suggested I do a video of the garden - cough, cough @magyarb.bsky.social. ๐ Well here it is. It is probably the best way to capture the whole garden. It is a horseshoe that breaks up patio & back lawn. The crying you hear in the background is Zoe. ๐น That damn barberry needs a trim. ๐คฃ
New garden photos. ๐ 1. New lily bloomed. It's really gorgeous. Hard to photograph because the blooms faces downward. 2. Yellow crocosmia. I'm obsessed with it. On the right cutleaf thistle starting to turn blue. 3. Twilight Fairy Crimson crocosmia. 4. Multi-headed allium really coming along.
More garden photos. ๐ 1. Another new lily opened. Beautiful & smells great. 2. More blooms are opening on the yellow crocosmia. They are so pretty & delicate. 3. Close up of the Turk's Cap. The petals have really recurved now. 4. Vanilla Drip coneflower. It is just producing blooms like crazy.
New garden pics. ๐ 1. New lily opened today. 2. Another new lily. This lily seems to have struggled a bit but there is a least 2 blooms. It will have the ruffled edges. 3. The orange turk's cap opened - nestled amongst the crocosmia. Lots more coming. 4. Bright pink coneflower is going crazy.
OK prepared to be dazzled! ๐ Check out this super cool hummingbird video from this morning. Watch the technique when the he sits down on the leaf to feed. When he turns to directly face the camera you can catch glimpse of the his red throat.
The hummingbird loves the pot of flowers on the mini-deck right in front of the catio. The hummingbird flew backwards quickly because Zoe lunged at the screen - she's off to the right. Sorry Zoe - you don't stand a chance of ever catching the hummingbird! ๐น
More garden photos. ๐ 1. The red & white lilies. I can sit in the kitchen with the sliding doors open & smell them here. It's heavenly. 2. Pink Angelonia. 3. This Hobbit Sea Holly is amazing. The colour - outstanding. 4. Whispurr Pink Catmint. It will get pink blooms eventually. Cats love them.
More garden photos. ๐ 1. Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus), a hardy shrub. This shrub will be chock full of blooms eventually. 2. Black mondo grass blooming. Very slow spreading. 3. Trailing fuchsias opening. 4. Another 2 stalks of the red lilies blooming with the big whites behind them.
More garden pics. ๐ 1. Giant red lilies opened today. 2. Red lilies - not as tall as the white but huge blooms. With crocosmia. 3. Lots of white lilies blooming now. 4. Japanese Maple. We removed about 8 from the top. It was never supposed to get that big. Springing back to life.
Shenanigans on the catio after everyone had some fresh catnip straight from the garden. Zoe FINALLY tried fresh nip for the first time! Boy, was she silly afterwards. Leo as usually overindulged. ๐น๐น Left to right: Leo snoozing on the couch, Dilly, Moo (by the tunnel), Zoe on the stairs.
More garden pics! ๐ 1/2. Surprise! The first giant white lily opened this morning. They smell beautiful. 3. Yellow crocosmia starting to bloom. 4. This is one crazy lily. If straightened it is probably over 7 feet. It is an orange tiger lily. I've tried to move it but can't find the bulb.
This nice big fat bumblebee was really going to town on the hosta blooms. I love how he just gets right up in there. ๐๐ My hubby said the video is so good I should be called Lisa B. DeMille. I think I am probably closer to Lisa B. Demented a old John Waters movie from 2000. (Cecil B. Demented). ๐คฃ๐๐คฃ
More garden photos. ๐ 1. The lily that just opened up yesterday looked sorta red. Now it's open & had another day in the sun the colour is changing to a beautiful pink. 2/3. Filling in some empty spaces with Blue Fescue & Purple Fountain grasses. 4. The orange Thunburgia is thriving.
New garden photos. ๐ 1. Super close-up of red roses on climbing rose. I didn't edit the image at all. 2. Hummingbird mint (Agastache) - belongs to mint family. It smells beautiful & is a magnet for hummingbirds/bees/ butterflies. 3. Bright pink & yellow coneflowers. 4. Pots of assorted flowers.
So we bought some little solar lights to light up the new mini-deck. All the lights on the catio, mini-deck and in the garden are solar. Yes I like solar lights - it kind of makes things feel magical and they only need sun power! ๐๐
More garden photos. ๐ 1/2. Well what a surprise! 1 of the giant lilies opened today. They open/stay upside down. 3. Lots of giant lilies. They are getting close to opening maybe a couple more weeks. My new cute solar powered fountain on the right. 4. Deep red day lilies.
Have you ever heard a hummingbird sing? I kept hearing the sound (in the video) in my back yard. I didn't know what it was until I saw the hummingbird in the tree. Anna's Hummingbird are only 1 of 2 species that can sing - the other is Costas. They do this quite a bit during the day. SOUND UP!
This was so surprising - Dilly on the top level of their outdoor cat tower! I have never seen him up there before - he always just preferred the bottom shelf. Looking very handsome Dills plus a get a much better view of the garden! ๐บโฅ๏ธ
Moo and Leo just enjoying a nice day on the catio. Leo, our oldest & dearest at 15, is sitting on the "temporary stairs" from like 18 years ago. ๐น I think Moo is just kind of pondering life and wondering why the hummingbirds ALWAYS get away. ๐น๐บ๐น
A few more garden photos. 1. Mini-deck the hubby built to cover up the sink hole in the patio. Easier than trying to tear it up & safer than tripping over uneven bricks. Moo & Zoe on the catio. 2. Bright pink coneflower. 3. Sriracha peppers are getting big! 4. Basil, parsley & oregano (in back).
One of the hummingbirds was having a field day in the garden. The flowers in the hanging pot are Cuphea 'Vermillionaire' (Firecracker Plant). They are the perfect shape for hummingbirds. Then off to the all time favourite - Crocosmia (Lucifer). Perfect colour, shape.
More garden photos. ๐๐บ 1. The climbing red rose that was reaching to the sky got brought down by the rain. Easier for me to cut a few to bring inside. The whole rose is loaded like this. 2. New platinum Blue Cutleaf Globe Thistle. 3. Yellow day lillies. 4. Close-up of the crocosmias as more bloom.
New garden pics. 1. Purple fountain grass with its little fuzzy blooms. 2. My cool Hobbit Sea Holly is starting to "blue" up nicely. 3. This is an allium. Instead of just being a single bloom this 1 will have multiple purple globes. 4. A bunch of white daisies in our small wildflower garden.
More garden photos. ๐๐บ 1/2. The crocosmia is starting to bloom. It is such an outstanding plant & very easy to care for. THIS is what the hummingbirds are really waiting for. 3. Up close photo of the pink Whirling Butterflies. It looks so a delicate. 4. Big, blue hydrangea.
So I was just checking out the garden this morning and one of the hummingbirds came by. As I was taking a video - he came right up to me and buzzed me. He did it quite a few times. Sound up on this video because you can really hear the hum of his wings.
