Electricity is 23% of global final energy but delivers 37% of useful energy and powers 46% of the global economy. We don't need to replace every fossil joule. We need to replace the services. A much smaller task. Great to see the @iea.org’s new Electrification report finally measure this.

Since the Hormuz crisis, EU gas prices are up 132% and oil 52%. Electricity is up 44%, after falling through spring. Every boiler, car and furnace that switches to electricity is less exposed to the energy crisis. Electrification is increasingly energy security.

Blackout in #Kyiv metro. Russia has been attacking Kyiv's energy grid relentlessly for days. Ukraine produces electricity but Russia damages/destroys the means to deliver it. Repairs often cannot start because of constant air alerts and danger of new attacks.

🇺🇦 Zelensky: Held a selector with the participation of military and government officials. First: Unfortunately, there is a lot of damage to the power grid and electricity transmission facilities. We have updated the needs for energy equipment and air defense packages.

Japanese researchers developed a compact generator that uses ambient moisture to produce electricity. Tested in rice fields, it powered sensors for months and was designed for low-power agricultural and environmental applications requiring continuous energy.

🇺🇦💡Russia plans to destroy up to 15 GW of Ukraine’s energy capacity through strikes, potentially leaving cities without electricity, heat, or water, - NYT 🇪🇺 Shmyhal showed European partners in Paris a document that Kyiv believes to be an intercepted Russian plan for attacks on Ukraine’s energy grid.

At least two dozen countries have launched programmes to swap oil and gas for electricity since the Iran war began. I spoke to ABC's PM about why, alongside António Guterres and Fatih Birol. Crises push countries towards energy they can make at home.

Angela Rayner is asked, "How bold is Andy Burnham prepared to be?" Rayner mentions help with energy bills & the bus fare cap. A temporary VAT cut on electricity bills (not introduced yet) & a temporary bus fare cap (not introduced yet) is not being bold.

Good morning with good news: US solar surged 24% to 50.8 TWh in August 2026, compared to 8/2025! Combined solar & wind also rose 24% to 84.7 TWh in 8/2026. S&W were 18.2% of US electricity in 8/2026. That's up 2.3 points from 15.9% in 8/2025. Their share peaked at 26.5% in April 2026 #energysky

It's official: Ireland has the most expensive electricity in Europe. Yet govt seem happy to bury their heads in the sand, and ignore calls for windfall taxes and targeted energy credits. In our Alt Budget, we have a wide range of measures that would make energy more affordable for you, right now.

Renewables are already cheaper than fossil power, and the Caribbean has two case studies to prove it This year the Dominican Republic, host of OLACDE Energy Week 2026, awarded 326 MW of renewables + batteries at 28% cheaper than the average cost of electricity generation in 2025 🧵 1/5
