This week I am attending and presenting at Star Formation Fields, a conference organised by @univie.ac.at at Rethymno in Crete! 🔭 A great opportunity to discuss the latest developments on star formation, the interstellar medium and young stellar populations! #stellarastro #galacticastro
Milky Way with Perseids meteors. First time taking meteors from various shots and overlaying onto the main foreground. The clouds and smoke didn’t cooperate, thus the meteors IN FRONT OF the cloud, but still good practice. #astrophotography #MilkyWay #Astronomy #Galactic #SpaceScience #Perseids
1/9 In 2019, a Warsaw research team presented the first 3D map of the Milky Way in the journal Science. The map is based on direct distances to thousands of Cepheids. A pioneering achievement, still widely cited. 🔭🧪⚛️ #galactic #astronomy #universe
1/6 #JWST captured a cloud of gas and dust having an unusual and fascinating shape. 🔭 Located 7,500 light-years away, in the Carina Nebula, it is a cometary globule called the Treasure Chest.🧪 esawebb.org/images/potm2... #galactic #astronomy #stars ⚛️
1/12 Think of two massive stars born together, then gone supernovae tens of thousands of years apart. From Earth, their remnants appear close and partially overlapping in the sky. 🔭🧪⚛️ It might not be a simple coincidence. Here’s what astronomers have discovered. #galactic #Universe
1/11 Imagine having a detailed map of the youngest & hottest stars in the #MilkyWay — the ones that form & die within just a few million years. A research team (Quintana et al.) has recently completed exactly that using Gaia DR3 data, reaching out to 2 kpc (~ 6,520 ly) from the Sun.🔭⚛️🧪 #galactic
The largest catalogue of runaway B-type stars ever released within 1 kpc! 🔭 In this study led by Juan Martínez García, from an all-sky sample of ~25,000 O- and B-type stars within 1 kpc, we found ~7% and ~17% of B-type and O-type stars being runaways, respectively. #stellarastro #galactic
It's been a blast hosting Alex Rodriguez as a Visiting Graduate Student Research Fellow this summer! Alex joined us in Pasadena from @umich.edu to hunt dark matter filaments connected to #galactic clusters with @kylefinner.bsky.social & Andreas Faisst.🌌🔭www.ipac.caltech.edu/page/graduate-fellowship
The local Milky Way unveiled by a new census of OB-type stars! 🔭 We have identified a population of ~100,000 O- and B-type stars within 2 kpc. We trace Galactic structure (including the Sagittarius-Carina arm) as well as OB associations and massive star-forming regions! #galactic #stellarastro
1/6 This image lets us observe light emitted by a dying star about 1500 years ago. Gemini North🔭, on Maunakea in Hawai‘i, captured NGC 1514 — the Crystal Ball Nebula — in detail: a shell of gas ejected during the final stages of a star’s life.⚛️🧪 noirlab.edu/public/news/... #astronomy #galactic
Wild to see the detail revealed by the #Euclid #Galactic Bulge Survey. Right side of the ESASKY image below shows a zoomed in edge of the EGBS area on the right, with adjoining Gaia DR3 data to the left. EGBS gives HST WFC3 level detail, but over an area 2000 larger! @eucliduk.bsky.social 🧪🔭

Time to go into quantum superposition ‘cause you’re going to want to attend both of these 2 pm Tuesday #AAS248 special sessions! 🔭👩💻💫 🤖 AI-Driven Science in the Survey Era bit.ly/4a0oXoX 🛰️Science with the All-Sky SPHEREx Mission bit.ly/4vNzqfO #astromethods #galactic #extragalactic #ipac40
Looking forward to #AAS248 next week…and our #IPAC40 PARTY! 🥂🥳 We're celebrating 40 years of IPAC with food, drinks, activities, and merch! Join us on Wednesday, June 17 @ 6:30-8:00 p.m. More details here: www.ipac.caltech.edu/page/aas248 🔭☄️#astrocode #exoplanet #galactic #extragalactic
🧵1/8 This is a historic milestone: the very first public image from VISTA telescope (Dec 2009).🔭 It features the Flame Nebula (NGC 2024) in Orion and its surroundings.🧪⚛️ Hidden in visible light, it bursts with newborn stars in infrared. eso.org/public/image... #histsci #galactic #astronomy

🧵 1/9 In a 2022 paper, scientists announced that NICER observed the merging of multimillion-degree X-ray spots on the surface of magnetar SGR 1830-0645 (SGR 1830 for short). Such merging had not been seen before for a magnetar. ➡️ nasa.gov/universe/nas... 🔭 🧪 ⚛️ #galactic #stellarastro #Astronomy
The paper has been accepted for publication in MNRAS! 🔭 The revised list contains 56 OB associations within 1 kpc, double the historical census! Besides tracing star formation and structure of the local Milky Way, this catalogue will be useful for target/follow-up studies! #stellarastro #galactic
Very cool new paper out from Marie Schölch et al. at @icc-ub.bsky.social! They use machine learning to construct a clean sample of young stars in-between the Large & Small Milky Clouds, two tiny galaxies orbiting our own. 🔭☄️ #galactic
Interesting study on molecular clouds! 🔭 In this paper led by Xabier Pérez-Couto, the 3D kinematics of 15 MC complexes within 2.5 kpc were studied using YSOs and OCs, showing the common origin of many nearby ones, and the crossing of the Solar System in the Orion cloud 11.5-16.5 Myr ago! #galactic
🧵1/5 For 170 years we thought there was a large inclined ring of young stars around the Sun.🔭 A new study using Gaia data shows instead that it doesn’t exist: Gould’s Belt is just a temporary alignment of a few star clusters.🧪⚛️ No ring, just a 3D asterism. arxiv.org/abs/2604.13225 #galactic
The Gould Belt does not exist! In this groundbreaking study led by Michelangelo Pantaleoni González, researchers have leveraged a catalogue of massive OB stars and young star clusters to shows that this historical structure is not a physical structure but a 3D asterism. #astronomy #galactic
🪐 🤝 🌌 Join us at the Planets in the Galactic Context workshop at the @flatironinstitute.org this September! The goal is to identify and define exciting questions at the intersection of exoplanet and Galactic science. Apply by June 5! planet-galaxy-workshop.github.io 🔭 #galactic #exoplanets
🧵1/9 This VLT image shows RCW 36, a young massive star cluster in Vela. Dark clouds look like a bird’s head and body, with bright filaments like wings. Below, a blue nebula glows from massive newborn stars. 🔭 🧪 ⚛️ www.eso.org/public/image... #Astronomy #galactic #universe #space
🧵 1/5 This splendid image by Mike Selby highlights the feature which makes the Trifid Nebula (M20, NGC 6514) famous: its three-lobed appearance. The name 'Trifid' means in fact 'three-lobe'. It was first used by John Herschel. ➡️ apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap21081... 🔭 🧪 ⚛️ #galactic #universe #astronomy
