Another fruitful Regulator Bookshop excursion: I've only just read an ARC of the astounding Music Against the Night by Yiyun Li, but the material book is beautiful and I wanted to cherish it and read it a second time on paper And I’ve been a Jasper Fforde loyalist since The Eyre Affair (2001)!
Ya gotta love the way mass market paperback publishers pumped up the lurid. Maxine Kumin, best known as a poet, opens The Passions of Uxport with the mystic revery of a guy scraping roadkill off a highway. Haunted/haunting books for October. Some recommendations, all of which can be read & reread, & are haunting, disorienting & unsettling in the most interesting & pleasurable ways. some are very scary… Not all of these books have ghosts of the conventional kind but who wants ‘ordinary’ ghosts.
