Kaya's Solarpunk Feed

by @kayas-kosmos.bsky.social

A feed I've created where I post stuff about climate hope to fight against climate doomerism. This feed includes art, infographics, videos, blog posts and also updates on the re-wilding project I'm involved in.

I wanted to show everyone a little project I have been working on in order to avoid doomscrolling and be more deliberate about the kind of things I engage with online. Introducing the interests mindmap! It's very much a WIP for now. 🧵 #Solarpunk

Some people have asked me why I bother fighting for a future I'm never going to see. I could say "It's not for me, it's for future generations" (which is true of course). But I also feel this question is flawed because the future I am trying to build is already happening right now. 🧵 #Solarpunk

I've seen the Ursula K. Le Guin "divine right of kings" quote doing the rounds a few times recently, but I feel like people keep excluding a very important part of it. This quote is about art and storytelling, and how these have the power to shape our future and set us free. #Solarpunk

🌻 Hello #Solarpunk feed! 🌻 I've just finished reading the most profound book I've read in a long time. "Radical Compassion" by Tara Brach. Solarpunk must be a space for radical healing and love to push back on the cruelty of fascism. This book is an in-depth guide on practising compassion.

This is why the #Solarpunk movement is so important. It is a way to get people excited about what an ecologically harmonious future could look like. Our species is very story-driven and that's why we need stories about radical hope to keep us fighting the good fight.

Nature is always giving gifts. The stars give their light, the plants give their fruits, the clouds give their water. This is not a scientific idea, but viewing nature this way can lend it a sense of personhood, a living, animate "being" worthy of our respect and compassion. #Solarpunk

I was debating whether to include this in the #Solarpunk feed or not, but this book has a heavy emphasis on anti-Capitalism, the importance of community and living a simple life that is close to nature. I also love the emphasis on embracing the muck and developing an appreciation for the gross.

I've just finished listening to the audiobook of "The Dispossessed" and three words I have for this are "refreshing", "thoughtful" and very, VERY #Solarpunk. The book is way ahead of its time considering that it was written in 1974 (which ironically plays into its deep discussion of time).

I'm putting this incredible book in the #Solarpunk feed because I think it is essential reading for understanding the many layers of oppression Indigenous people face. I genuinely got emotional at what this world is losing as entire cultures and worldviews are stamped out by Neoliberalism.
