Medical physicist Edith Quimby was one of the founders of nuclear medicine. Discovering how to use radiation to diagnose/treat diseases like cancer safely, her research transformed radiology from a dangerous, experimental guessing game into a precise clinical science. Died #OTD 1982. #WomenInSTEM
Students made their first minicomics in my intro making course - mostly standard format but this student, a first time maker(!), did something so off the charts I’m still reeling from it! & he made like 12 of them for his classmates! A paper engineering feat of flipbookery as well as killer drawing!
For the spooky season, I'll feature a Hallowtober deep-space object each week. Week two: Casper the Friendly Ghost Nebula. Its nebulosity consists of blue reflection (eyes), dark dust (face/shading), and red Hα emission. #astrophotography #astronomy #nature #longexposure #eastcoastkin #photography
Strong and shallow #earthquake with a magnitude of M7.7 in #Panama. Here's the seismic signal of my Raspishake seismometer 12 mins after origin time in Herne, Germany, which is 9200 km away from the epicenter. 🧪⚒️ #geology @raspishake.bsky.social
💯 > The rebranding is also a distraction, redirecting public attention away from resource-pillaging data centers, a fragile economic bubble and rising safety concerns. This is a core MO of the industry to avoid critique and escape regulation. doi.org/10.5281/zeno...
Sonic is going to space! In a project with 5 space organizations that include JAXA and NASA, Sonic will join a special mission to Phobos, one of Mars' moons, launching on 10/20! If successful, the spacecraft will send a test image of the Blue Blur back to Earth...a world's first!
OpenAI, like many for-profits, has little interest in foundational research. What they want is marketing, and that's what their AI math proofs are. OpenAI never bothered to check if the formalization of their AI proofs matched the actual text in the proof. Basic stuff. 🙄 arxiv.org/abs/2610.081...
To pursue extended goals, the PFC monitors performance and the value of cognitive control, thus preventing goal abandonment. #AI models struggle with #hallucinations because they lack this monitoring circuit--forcing #engineers to reinvent it as an agent "harness". #Neuroscience
deeply confused about this comment by Scholze, here Cryptographic protocols are designed such that we expect it to be literally impossible, which crucially is very different from mathematical problems, which are formulated very much w/ the expectation that a solution is possible What am I missing?
This is a new deep-field image from JWST, designed to look for the point of origin of a fast radio burst. The bright, multi-point features are stars in the Milky Way. Everything else is an entire galaxy.
Preliminary track verification statistics for #Isaias show that the Google Deepmind model dominated the model guidance by a huge margin. The National Hurricane Center closely and wisely followed it. Details at bmcnoldy.blogspot.com/2026/10/isai...
A prediction market for peer review. Have we reached peak AI? 🤔
