Isi got up. She would sleep in the bed. “So whenever you feel ready to share, please don’t worry about it being the 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦. That doesn’t matter. I told you I was half-mer underground after you were attacked and, essentially, drugged. I think we’re past those considerations, cherry.”

“When we first met, I poured so much trust into you. I told you so many things about myself. Things I’m not proud of, too. And of course there are things you don’t know. That’s normal. But with you… It feels like there’s some key piece of information I don’t have. That you won’t 𝘨𝘪𝘷𝘦 me.”

Part of Isi wanted to wrap her arms around Rory, tell her everything would come in time. She really was trying to be patient. To keep herself in check. But then there was her gut, screaming at her that this had already lasted too long. “What if there’s no perfect moment?”

“I…” There was a pause. Rory looked around, as if evaluating the moment, the location. “You’re right, I’m not trying to make you feel like this but it’s true that you’ve been kept in the dark and I need to come clean about some stuff. I think… I’ve been trying to find the right time.”

“I don’t need help, I’m handling it.” “Okay. Then maybe I need help. Maybe I need a little insight into what’s going on in your head. Because I swear we have conversations I can barely navigate every day lately. One minute you’re committed to me, the next you’re full of secrets.”

Then, it was too much. Too much not to speak up. She’d tried to respect the boundaries drawn, to give Rory time. But it was clearly not helping. So she at least had to get it off her chest. “I feel so unsteady lately… I know you’re still going through a lot, but I just don’t know how to help you.”

Isi had thought both of them would sleep on the couch. Together. But when they were showered and ready for bed, she started thinking maybe she’d accept Lorelei’s offer. Rory opened her mouth, before closing it again. Another few seconds went by.

As Rory stepped outside, Lorelei came out of the bathroom: “Come here, Isidora.” “Do you need help with something?” “Yes. I would like you to help me reorganise my bathroom, please. And if you do, Rory can sleep on the couch tonight, you won’t have to.”

“It’s supposed to storm tomorrow so we’ll see how it goes then.” She added, pinching her nose after taking her hands off her temples. Isi knew what that meant. Rory’s head was hurting again. “I’ve got to call Jero back, I missed his call earlier. I’ll be right back.”

They were back. All the unsaid things, floating around them. Parasiting their every conversation. Isi could feel them. “I hope she’s not coming across as too much, she-” Isi cut her partner off, trying her best to sound unbothered: “So far, she’s pretty normal!” “Yeah, so far…” Rory repeated.

A few minutes later, Lorelei had to use the bathroom and Isi was still coming down from the unexpected guess. “She has a sixth sense, I’m sorry. I should have warned you.” “That she could tell what I was?” “No, that she always accidentally asks the worst questions.” “Oh.” Isi nodded.

Until the mémé turned to Isidora and asked: “So, are you a mermaid?” Isi felt an anxious laugh escape her. “You can let that go now mémé, I’m not 8 anymore!” Rory joked, quickly taking control of the conversation. “For years you said you wanted to either be one or marry one!” “I was a child!”

She gasped when Rory told her it had been made with Strawberries grown in the Ridge, prayed before blowing out the candles, and insisted that the girls frame the picture Isidora had taken of her and Rory with the cake. It was such a happy day.

Once home from the rec center and after a short stop at the library, they went back to Lorelei’s house, ready to celebrate her birthday. Rory brought out the huge cake and her mémé hid her face in her hands, laughing at the small amount of candles they’d managed to stick on it.

“I’ve not read anything new in what feels like centuries… Would you pick something for me, Isidora?” The gentleness gutted Isi. “Of course. And on the way back, we could stop at the public library? We walked passed it on the way here. Maybe they’ll have newer stock?” “I would love that.”

They made their way to an art room, Lorelei explaining she used to come here to pick up a book and read, as this was usually the quietest place in the building. They slowed to a stop and the woman let out a long sigh. She held a hand out, Isi grabbing it without questionning.

“I’ve never been more serious in my life.” Rory’s voice was low. “But I’ve started wondering if, maybe, it’s ruining my chances with her.” Isi didn’t wait for an answer to come. Dedicated to her resolution of not eavesdropping anymore, she cleared her throat. “So, where to next?”

After 3 rounds of the game, Isi nipped to the bathroom. When she came back, the two women had moved on to observing the big fish tank. “You really don’t need to bring me here anymore, bébé, you must know that. But I do enjoy getting to know your Isidora more. You seem serious about her?”

The first order of the day had apparently been to take Mémé Lorelei to the rec center next door. Apparently, she didn’t get to leave the house in between Rory’s visits, so it was an important step to get her to breathe some fresh air, see some people… play bridge.

“Lucky?!” The old woman repeated, sounding offended. “I prayed, bébé. I prayed for love to find you-” Isi focused on the other sounds in the port. She’d overheard too many sensitive things lately and it wasn’t her place to listen in on family matters.

“It’s so nice to finally meet you Lorelei” Isi smiled wide. “I’m going to grab our bags, I’ll be right back!” Both the Oaklows nodded, grateful. And before she’d even reached the door, Rory’s grandma looked up: “You did well this time, bébé. I can feel it.” “I know mémé, I consider myself lucky.”

“Of course I am, bébé! And I’m hoping to hear the same from you, too!” Isi couldn’t take her eyes off of the reunion happening in front of her. This felt so… genuine. Both of them started speaking so fast, trying to catch each other up, the old lady’s eyes fluttering from Rory to her partner.

Without even saying hi, Rory planted herself right across from the old woman. “Mémé!! This is Isidora, she’s ma chérie!” And without missing a beat, the answer came: “𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲.” Then, and only then, did Rory lean in to kiss her cheek: “How are you? Still up to no good?”

“You’re not going to wait until she tells you to come in?” She teased her partner, who now simply looked as excited as a child on Winterfest Eve. “Like you said, she’s been expecting us! And I can’t wait for her to meet you!” Inside, a small, kind looking lady waited patiently for them.

Yet when they finally parked up, it was in front of a building raised on stilts, overlooking the bay. Isi took Rory’s hand, expecting to have to lead her towards the front door, but didn’t meet any resistance. In fact, she ended up being the one pulled inside, after nothing more than a quick knock.

They got to the small fishing town mid-morning, the streets both busy and yet… quiet. It was like sound was more padded in this place. Like the fog not only dampened the colours, but also the noise. The bike seemed so incredibly loud compared to everything else. Rory’s body slowly tensed up.

Lyaenidae @lyaenidae.bsky.social · 3d

They would celebrate as such. “And of course I’ll take that extra coffee! But we can’t get to your grandma’s too late, she’s expecting us today, remember?” This would be the very last way Rory delayed their arrival in the Bay, so Isi let it slide, one last time.

And because Rory absolutely hated for her physical appearance to remind her of what she’d been through, they also still dyed her roots, every week. Which made the hair grow even slower and even thinner. Isi rose to place a kiss on her alpha’s mouth. This was definitely a win.

It might have seemed like the most ridiculous thing ever, but when Isi put some distance between them and met Rory’s eyes, she remembered all the nights they’d spent talking about this. Rory’s hair had been growing very slowly, incredibly thin and naturally white. Ever since she’d been kidnapped.

“Come here.” Rory nodded slightly. “I need to squeeze you, I’m too happy about this little hair bun!” And so Isi put her reservations away, everything that had transpired between them aside, and threw herself in her lover’s arms. “I’m so happy for you!” “Thank you, really.”

Rory must have seen the slight hesitation on Isi’s face, because she straightened her head, eyebrows raising just a bit. “Unless you don’t want a pumpkin spice coffee?” Both of them knew she’d never say no to this.

But a smile had bloomed on Rory’s face: “Nothing’s wrong, angel. Quite the opposite actually: my hair is finally long enough to be tied up!” Isi felt her chest relax once more. “Oh! You’ve been waiting for this.” “Have been. And it’s thanks to your help that it has. We should get you a treat.”

Isidora was finishing getting ready the next day, sitting on the bed in the room they’d rented, when Rory let out a groan. After their disagreement the night before, she was on high alert. In a second, she was on her feet and asking, voice pressing: “What is it? What’s wrong?”

Isi wondered how much of that was the real reason Rory was stalling their arrival there. It sounded like she was actually dreading that more than her grandmother. So she made sure she filled her tone with confidence: “The second you want to leave, we’ll leave Cherry.” She felt her relax a little.

They started walking towards the door of the Bnb. And after a few steps, sounding like she was trying to be detached, Rory added: “I also am not sure what being in that place will make me feel. I could end up hating it. The rain, the gloomy, the small minded people…”

She looked like she had something to reply, but it sure as hell wasn’t ‘𝘐 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘵𝘰𝘰’ so Isi hoped the silence would last. In some ways, it was better. A few seconds went by. She moved to slip her hand in the crook of Rory’s arm, looking for confirmation that she hadn’t pushed too far.

Isi felt indignation rise. She pointed a finger at Rory’s chest: “And you think I can’t handle 𝘥𝘪𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵? I bet I’m much more odd than she is! And either way, trust me, nothing is going to 𝙨𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙚 me away at this point! I love you, remember?” Rory crossed her arms on her chest.

Isidora untangled her fingers, trying to seem less sad than she really was. “And it’s fine.” Rory put a hand on her forehead “It’s not. You don’t get it. I would be proud to introduce you.” Heart flutters, hope blooming. “Then why?” “I don’t want her to scare you away. She’s… different.”

Without looking, Isi knew her alpha’s eyes had narrowed. And yet, she didn’t want to look up. Her heart was heavy and her head full, but her mouth empty. Maybe it was obvious or maybe Rory read it on her face, because she answered her own question: “You think I don’t want her to meet you.”
