All in all, the rule undermines science. It puts our brightest innovators out of work, when they are on the cusp of discovering a treatment that could keep someone you love on this earth for years to come. Yet, we rise up with our community of NIH staff, scientists, and advocates across the country. Through our collective action, we are making it clear that scientific excellence is non-negotiable.
27 UNIHTED Statement on 91 FR 32198, Regulation for Federal Financial Assistance If the proposed rule from Russell Vought's Office of Management and Budget becomes final, it marks the end of 80 years of U.S. leadership in science. The rule constrains academic freedom, limiting scientific inquiry to the whims of whoever holds executive office. Scientists will experience whiplash as priorities change across administrations. Work approved by one administration will be shelved by the next, and we will never reach answers. The rule further undermines peer review, meaning politicians, instead of scientists and patients, drive funding decisions. The rule buries scientists in unnecessary and cumbersome paperwork and red tape, requiring approvals for every minor expenditure for even the most basic scientific activities, such as publishing papers and attending conferences.
