If this rule is strictly enforced, my designs will not be available on Etsy AT ALL. I DO agree with the rule about using your own photos. If you're selling prints, you should demonstrate how YOUR prints look. What quality can buyers expect? What colors/materials do you use? And beyond that, model designers aren't necessarily great photographers (I'm terrible at it). So create your own product shots that make the sale and differentiates yourself from the competition. Finally, I hope people selling prints consider remixing the designs they print. It seems more likely to me that Etsy will allow prints that have been customized/remixed by the seller, just like someone who sells restored antique jewelry boxes or similarly transformed items.

Question: Are there any ways I can get more people to download my models if I do not have lots of followers? I figure that the photo cover is important since that is what people will see, but do you have any other advice? Answer: Yes, a cover photo of the final print is extremely important. It proves that your model can be printed and shows that you put in valuable time to fully test it. If a model is complex, include multiple photos and/or a video to demonstrate how it works. Unfortunately, downloads are a popularity contest to some extent. That can be very frustrating when you're starting out. I started on Thingiverse about 5 years ago. It took months and many models before I could get more than a few downloads per design or any posted prints. My advice is to not worry too much about these statistics and keep making good models. Eventually a few of your designs (there's no telling which ones) will do really well and people will start downloading your older designs. Sometimes this is annoying because older models are often the least refined... oops. Try to answer questions people have about your designs and support them if they have printing issues. If you do that, people will know you care about what you're posting. The way I see it, if you're making models you like, you're already a success.
