Although they are technically dolls, their aesthetic nature leads to their use as decorative accents. This particular doll is from a pattern on Amigurumi.com, a pattern market place. It resembles Kiki and Jiji from the Miyazaki Ghibli film.
Amare — 'to love' A new genre of romance visual novels aimed at a broad audience of diverse players. "Otome", meaning 'maiden', was coined in 1994 in Japan to describe romance visual novels targeted to a female audience. Since its inception, the genre has continued to grow and expand into the rest of the world. Now, independent game makers have begun to challenge what "otome" is and expand the boundaries of the genre, making otome more diverse, and more inclusive. What is "Amare"? "Amare" is a term that helps identify games which still have a similar tone and feel to otome games, as well as similar story elements - but also have attributes that may set them apart from their more 'traditional" counterparts. This term was coined by indie game makers who realise their games have diverged from otome while still maintaining an important overlap that makes these games stand out from other visual novels. Common Elements Non-male gaze oriented Focus on romance over hyper-sexualisation Fluid borders with other genres Diverse casts and creators Girl x Boy Romances Girl x Varied Romances Varied MC x Boy Romances Varied MC x Varied Romances Otome and Amare still have a significant overlap and many games may fit well in both categories. Neither genre invalidates the other. But making a distinction acknowledges the way Western and Indie style otomes have diverged from the traditional and original take on the genre. What can I do? If you are a creator, use the term. Nothing is born overnight so you don't have to STOP using other terms. But using "amare" as a tag or to describe your games will help spread knowledge of it around. If you are a player or community member, you can just share the word. Get other creators familiar with it. Start using it to describe games Start using it to search games. This helps validate the term as something that is an actual thing - not just a word someone made up.
