Three Sandhills cranes flying during their yearly migration. Every year these birds travel thousands of miles between northern breeding grounds as far as Alaska and southern wintering sites in Mexico. Their journey features large stopover flocks sometimes in the thousands.
The comb-crested jacana, also known as the lotusbird or lilytrotter, is the sole species in the genus Irediparra. This striking bird is easily identified by its black crown and hindneck, contrasted with a bright red fleshy wattle on its forehead and forecrown. During breeding season, its comb turns vibrant pink, fading to orange afterward. Found across southeastern Borneo, Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Timor-Leste, and northern and eastern Australia, it inhabits large freshwater wetlands, swamps, and lakes. It relies on floating vegetation, such as water lilies and hyacinths, to support its weight as it moves across the water’s surface. Though rare and localized, it is not considered globally threatened.
Canada Geese (Branta canadensis) are large, migratory waterfowl with black heads, white chinstraps, and brown bodies. They migrate in V-shaped formations, honking loudly. In Arizona, they pass through in fall and spring with some overwintering in lakes and wetlands. Known for their adaptability, they can also be territorial, especially during nesting season.
Vernazza, located in Cinque Terre, Italy, is known for its colorful cliffside houses, historic charm, and stunning coastal views. Located along the Ligurian coast, this small fishing village features a natural harbor, piazzas, and the medieval Doria Castle, which once protected it from pirates. You can explore its narrow, winding streets and hike the scenic trails connecting it to the other Cinque Terre villages.

Wat Chomphet is a serene Buddhist temple located across the Mekong River from Luang Prabang, Laos. Built in 1888, this tranquil site is known for its simplicity and stunning panoramic views of the town and surrounding mountains. Visitors can climb a short staircase to the temple, where they’ll find peaceful surroundings, intricate architectural details, and a quiet retreat from the bustling streets of Luang Prabang.
The Alaskan wilderness is a stunning expanse of rugged mountains, vast forests, and dramatic coastlines shaped by ancient glaciers. Towering icefields and massive glaciers carve through the landscape, creating breathtaking views and pristine rivers.
The saddleback, or tīeke, is a striking bird native to New Zealand, known for its glossy black plumage and distinctive chestnut-colored “saddle” across its back. Belonging to the ancient wattlebird family, it shares its lineage with the endangered kōkako and the extinct huia. Once widespread, saddlebacks are now restricted to predator-free islands and sanctuaries due to habitat loss and introduced predators. Their loud, melodious calls and important role in forest ecosystems, such as seed dispersal, make them a treasured symbol of New Zealand’s unique wildlife heritage. Reaching for the stars. This bristlecone pine is one of the oldest living trees on earth. Many in the vicinity have been core sampled to be older than the pyramids. Often a seedling that is only 6 inches tall may be 40+ years old. Further, the diameter growth is estimated to be 1 inch per century. Stretching for 90 miles along the Pacific Ocean, Big Sur boasts dramatic landscapes, including rugged cliffs, pristine beaches, and lush forests, some of which are redwood. It's home to iconic landmarks like Bixby Creek Bridge (pictured in the distance here) and McWay Falls. There are endless opportunities for outdoor adventure, from hiking and camping to whale watching. If you know where to look you can even find jade along the shoreline.
A volcanic cinder cone, Sunset Crater last erupted around 1000 years ago. In winter the white snow on the black cinders can offer beautiful contrast.
