 This is a generation that has always lived with a feeling of apocalypse right there. They have known no other time without a climate catastrophe, without, you know, fascism at the doorsteps, without genocide. And they're very aware. They're a very aware generation. So I want, and I feel that in a lot of classrooms, they're completely gaslit into not being allowed to talk about these things. Yes. Often we don't know how to, as faculty, as educators, don't know how to give space to talk about these things.

When you kind of see how life can proliferate in any number of contexts, you know, if, if anybody's ever gone to the desert, you'll see how much life actually can still proliferate in the desert. I don't know if that offers people hope, but I do hope that it does, that there can be other ways of living. We've already witnessed it. We've all born witness to other possibilities of living during the pandemic. Every day. There is evidence that other forms of living are possible.

For My Students, After the Election There are still your stories, still stars in the pine trees. There are still children making their way back from school, trying not to step on cracks in the sidewalk, believing it matters. There are still mothers kneeling in the ruins, promising the gunshots aren't coming. There are still fathers alone in the night, the wounds in them like mule-deer in the orchards, trying not to clack their antlers. There is still the heart, the moon. Come, loves, let's stand here after madness. The world is not over, only broken. There are old books, there are horses in the lemon trees. There are children, still, waiting in the classrooms, looking up with tired eyes full of wonder. Look at them. There is work we have to do. -Joseph Fasano
