Meteor 3.5 is one of those releases. Since around 2014, Meteor's real-time magic has been powered by oplog tailing. It served us incredibly well, but it always had a structural flaw: the oplog records every change in your database, so Meteor had to observe all of it, whether your app cared about those changes or not. One busy collection could drag down your entire app. If you've ever run Meteor at scale, you know exactly what I'm talking about.

Change Streams unlock real-time reactivity on managed and serverless MongoDB tiers (Atlas Shared, serverless) where oplog access isn't available — no more being forced into expensive polling. You see? Before, if you wanted ze cheap serverless database, you paid ze penalty in constant polling — ze CPU always tapping ze database, tak, tak, tak, asking "anything new? anything new?" like an impatient customer. Now you may run ze lean managed tier and keep ze real-time behaviour, so you are not forced up into ze premium bracket just to stay reactive. I call it The NULL-byte Serial-Port Killer In my very first job after graduating from University, I was on a team that was building an engine diagnostic system for a Coast Guard ice breaker. The idea was that our system would monitor the operating stats of the mechanical equipment on the ship, run the stats through some rules coded using engineering know-how, and instantly diagnose engine troubles. For the 90s, this was a cutting edge application, with multiple windows displaying tables and graphs in any which way the user could desire. It was awesome, except for the getting the actual stats. All the engine operating stats were available via a data bus that could be tapped through a standard RS-232 serial port. Of course, we couldn't bring the ship to us. So we went to the ship, plugged into the serial port, and using some modem software made an hours long recording of the serial output while the ship went through a variety of manoeuvres. Armed with this recording, we went back to our office and coded a driver to read and interpret the data. We had from the original manufacturer a list of multipliers and offsets we could apply to each channel of data (there were 32 channels in total) to convert channel values to real-world numbers like speed, temperature, and pressure. It worked great! But only some of the time. Every few minutes, the channels would go haywire, with the values going all over the place for a few seconds before settling down again. These spikes of chaos seemed to happen at random, making it impossible to use the data for any meaningful diagnostics. We were stumped. Months passed. We were fruitlessly attempting to fit predictive polynomial curves to the randomized data, trying to find a pattern, when I noticed something odd. The agent harness is the 6509 This is the exact pattern I wrote about in the migration control plane piece: put deterministic code in front of an LLM, and deterministic code on the other end of it, so the model does what it does best - categorize, summarize, handle the probabilistic work - and then hands that output to something that can validate it landed inside the guardrails of the task. Same motion. Exactly. What we've been doing instead, across the industry, is using agentic harnesses to try to turn the 6509 into a VBR switch. You can't do that in networking — it's physically impossible. And you can't do it in Al either. You cannot turn a probabilistic runtime into a deterministic one by wrapping it in scaffolding and asking it to try harder. My loop control experiment showed we can get better results out of the process. It also showed we cannot force the tool to do something it fundamentally cannot do. So here is the lesson, and it runs all the way through traditional systems and Al systems alike. Al is not magic. It is a tool. Placed correctly from an authority perspective inside the workflow, it is an exceptionally effective one. But you cannot cede authority or responsibility into a black box you can't audit, can't interrogate, and can't treat as deterministic - because that was never the role of the platform.

And that behavior is what made it infamous. BonziBuddy started as a free "desktop companion" that could tell jokes, search the web, and read emails aloud, but it became widely classified as spyware/adware — it served pop-up ads, tracked browsing habits, and was a pain to uninstall. Bonzi Software eventually faced legal trouble (including an FTC settlement over deceptive ads and a lawsuit over violating the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act), and the product was discontinued around 2004.
