The Thin Man by Dashiell Hammett A high proportion of the book is dialogue, which Hammett does excellently, and he makes great use of the fact that everyone is lying all the time. Nick Charles is a great hardboiled hero: he is perpetually irritable and drunk, but never fazed. Nora is great as a sharp, socialite Watson, and her interactions with Nick make the book; it’s easy to see why the couple went on to carry a film series.
