Another example of the method. In this version a noise texture is used to randomly mix the two images together instead, and a third handle has been added to our color ramp for even more control over how we blend the two textures.
A shader node tree in blender. The color attribute is run through a color ramp and used as the factor to mix two image textures. The image textures are set to Box Projection and given "Object" texture coordinates to avoid requiring the model to be UV unwrapped first, though using an unwrapped model can yield better results. The handles on the color ramp are used to dial in blending at the edges of the textures. Soft edges between the black and white areas on the color attribute also help with this process.

The image shows a variety of game textures in a folder. The textures have been reduced to an even further retro style using SLK_img2pixel and converted to a 256-color palette I derived from hue-shifting the famous painting "Washington Crossing The Delaware" (Emanuel Leutze c 1851) to resemble Quake 2's palette.

Two 3D modeled wrenches in a retro graphics style. (156 Triangles) The top wrench is manually shaded using simple gradient textures, which are effective at adding more detail than flat (vertex) shading without adding more geometry. This style is reminiscent of the flat shading commonly used in N64 games, it's also popular in mobile games where high performance assets are still desirable. The bottom wrench has had procedural rust and grime added over the base color, which was then baked to a final 196x196 texture. This texture lends itself to a more PSX style look. Due to the Playstation's larger texture memory than its competitors, image textures were more commonly used in PS1 games to add detail to objects.
