People do not laugh at punchlines because they choose to—not, again, if it is the kind of laugh that leaves you in tears, or gasping for air. That kind of laugh is something that happens to you, or at best something you surrender to rather than consciously produce. Persuasion is the same way. You do not choose your beliefs, or the range of beliefs you are open to considering. That is something that happens to you, based on what you have experienced, the contingencies of your cultural background, personal history, and personality. While the decision to publish an article or post on social media is a degree more intentional than whether you laugh at a joke or are persuaded by an argument, in practice it works very similarly. Publications become persuaded that this is “a story,” social media accounts become persuaded that this is engaging content, their actions help to perpetuate that belief among their peers, and belief becomes reality. It is a cascade of actions grounded in beliefs which become self-fulfilling.

Among the greatest insights that Plato's account of Socrates affords us is that, contrary to the general opinion, it is more difficult to ask questions than to answer them. When the partners in the Socratic dialogue are unable to answer Socrates' awkward questions and try to turn the tables by assuming what they suppose is the preferable role of the questioner, they come to grief. Behind this comic motif in the Platonic dialogues there is the critical distinction between authentic and inauthentic dialogue. To someone who engages in dialogue only to prove himself right and not to gain insight, asking questions will indeed seem easier than answering them. There is no risk that he will be unable to answer a question. In fact, however, the continual failure of the interlocutor shows that people who think they know better cannot even ask the right questions. In order to be able to ask, one must want to know, and that means knowing that one does not know.
By contrast, Alan and Katherine focused chiefly on the rancid gender and class politics engaged in by Platner's most vocal fans in the pundit class, such as Ken Klipperstein, who referred to Democrats that have not cheated on their wife multiple times as "smoothgroins." And it's tied to the fundamental question about Platner, beyond what part of the coalition he belongs to (something I am not sure there is a consistent, coherent answer to, which will likely make him a better partisan than otherwise): does he represent a kind of Trump-ification of the Democratic Party, as it transforms itself into a more effective resistance? The excuses for the most recent allegations against Platner, when the accusers aren't simply called liars, sound a great deal like the excuses Trump supporters make for his own sexual misconduct.

To date, in no Western European democracy has the far right attempted to subvert democratic institutions.38 Democracies with plurality electoral rules and two or two-and-a-half party systems are more vulnerable to the manufacture of illiberal electoral pluralities into governing majorities. In Canada and the United Kingdom, for example, if ethnonationalist factions were to gain control of established conservative parties, the far right would be well-positioned to win a parliamentary majority.

watchdogs in their agencies. The high number of vacant IG offices that exist now (some of which have existed across administrations) shows that the VRA approach does not work well for IGs. Fortunately, there is a model that could be adapted for temporary IG appointments; namely the interim US attorney appointment statute.35 To guard against the politicization of local US attorney offices, Congress offered an alternative method for appointment of interim US attorneys. This appointment method co-exists with the VRA method. Under this law, when a US attorney position becomes vacant, the Attorney General can make an interim appointment, but only for 120 days. Once that time period ends, if there is no Senate-confirmed US attorney in place, the district court for that district may appoint an interim to serve until a permanent official is confirmed. Over the past year, the courts have rebuffed numerous efforts by the Attorney General to evade the time limits in the interim US attorney statute and the VRA.36 The courts can make these appointments because the Appointments Clause of Article II of the Constitution authorizes the courts to appoint “inferior officers.” According to the Supreme Court, an inferior officer is one who reports to someone below the level of the president.37 US Attorneys report to the Attorney General and hence are inferior officers, as the Justice Department conceded in United States v. James.38 IGs report to their agency head and thus should also be considered inferior officers, especially since, unlike US attorneys, IGs only make recommendations and provide information; they do not make policy or administer laws. Because independence is integral to the function of an inspector general, if an IG position remains vacant for a lengthy period of time, there is a strong case for placing interim appointment authority with a neutral judiciary. When it is just one person, this may make the most sense. After all, why let a lie stand unopposed? It may also turn out to be the result of a misunderstanding that can be resolved relatively easily. Now let’s say there are a hundred people spreading a lie about you. Can you take this approach with all one hundred? Should you? I have seen people attempt this relatively straightforward approach. And my observation is that it is not a strategy that scales, especially not on social media. Even without algorithms muddling things, in a reverse-chronological feed, the way that larger audiences are going to encounter the disagreement is going to be partial, in the middle of something still ongoing, and not necessarily in a way that will help your case. Even if you are entirely in the right, even if you’re being smeared with the most outrageous of lies, a good faith observer may enter the discussion at a point that (without the larger context) makes you look bad. The more you directly engage the horde, the larger it grows—this is a well established principle.

The two biggest U.S. immigrant detention contractors, GEO Group and CoreCivic, have a business model that relies on detainee labor. And since profit comes from the contract minus costs, these companies make more if they can keep the costs of detainee labor down.. And profit they have. GEO Group experienced a nearly eightfold increase in profits between the last year Biden was in office and the first year of Trump’s second administration, now earning a quarter of a billion dollars in profit. Today I’ll do a survey of forced labor in concentration camp settings, looking at why it tends to arise even in cases where it’s not part of the original plan, how it unfolds, and what kind of resistance against it has risen over the last century or so in concentration camps and prison systems alike.

But I do not think we can count on getting a Senate majority without Maine. And even if we could, again, every Senate seat counts. The Biden trifecta should have taught everyone that, but it bears repeating: Every. Senate. Seat. Counts. In 2029 we should not be aiming to just expand child tax credits or any of the many things that Manchin and Sinema killed. We should be aiming to aggressively pursue a new Reconstruction. How many Senate seats would it take to get enough Democrats willing to kill the filibuster, never mind to pursue an aggressive political program afterwards? So we get as many as we can. But that does not actually answer the question. I don't really have an answer. All I know is that I wish Graham Platner was not the candidate in Maine and I am glad I do not live there. Maine has ranked choice voting, so if I did have to vote there, I would likely write someone in to rank ahead of him, rank him last, and not rank Collins at all.
Talking of the US, we should explore a North American freedom of movement deal. Say Canada, USA, Mexico. These countries are likewise deeply historically, culturally, and economically connected. Think of the hundreds of billions we’d save in border enforcement alone (and what socially productive purposes that money could be used for instead). The harms caused by this regime we could likewise simply do away with. Many Americans claim they have no problem with Mexican migrants, just those who came here illegally. Taking this at face value, we can elegantly solve that problem by making all movement legal. The tearing down of ugly and intrusive border fencing would become a glorious symbol of human freedom on the march. Nor should we limit our ambitions to the global north. Let’s start where we have the greatest connection and work out, aiming to find partners who will make mutually beneficial deals with us. Britain has a historic connection to any number of amazing countries through the Commonwealth. What would freedom of movement with, say, India look like? That’s basically unthinkable now, due to pervasive racist fears of being ‘swamped’ by ‘hordes’ of non-white aliens. But the few who’ve looked into it think it could work for both countries. A saner society would at least consider it.

For centrists, the solution is something like “making the forgotten man feel heard,” to prove that the government won’t neuter him and rob him of autonomy with such girly things like welfare, but instead “invest in [their] communities” (how this is different from government support is unclear), “so that they can solve their own problems.” For the leftists, it’s something-something socialism, democratic or otherwise, that respects men’s invaluable contributions to the working class (of which they form the lion's share or even sole part). In every case, it’s women and feminisation that are the enemies, telling these noble creatures what they can and cannot say, shaming them for a rude gesture or a little bro’ing down. They don’t want to be called bigots; that hurts their feelings and makes them not want to vote for you. They owe nothing to no one. They’re autonomous. They deserve respect.
