Equally close to her was another talented artist, Louise Abbéma, a mannish, monkeylike little woman who was a prominent member of Paris's lesbian world. Needless to say, it was rumored that they, too, were lovers — Sarah's supposed Sapphism was a feature of several of the romans à def wit-ten about her. She may well have been bisexual, or perhaps she just liked giving pleasure to her friends and had no reservations about how to do it. Certainly, she and Abbéma made portraits of each other and posed together in provocative photographs, and of course she reveled in playing male roles. Whatever the truth about the sexual feeling or experience between them, Abbéma, like Clairin, remained an intimate friend until the very end. From a professional point of view, the most important of her relationships with an artist was with the earthy (and sexy) Gustave Doré, the famous illustrator of Dante, Cervantes, and Poe, with whom she had an idyllic affair until it too faded ino friendship.
