A candidate for the Hebra Kadisha had to show his courage by cooking a pot of cemetery porridge at night before being accepted. When, during the task, the chairman of the society wanted to scare him, hid nearby and extended his hand to him, supposedly begging him for some food, the candidate filled his hand with boiling porridge. Since then, the society has stopped the tests.
Text describing the process
Two 19th century brown stoneware jars which have a slip or glaze. They both taper towards the top where there is a shallow rolled lip. One is smaller than the other and the smaller one has lost some of its glaze/slip. These jars were found under the floorboards of a house with a stone carved face see LVPL-554BD1. Noramlly these objects would be too late to record on the PAS database but due to their association with the stone head they have been recorded. he Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) is a voluntary programme run by the United Kingdom government to record the increasing numbers of small finds of archaeological interest found by members of the public. The scheme started in 1997 and now covers most of England and Wales. Finds are published at https://finds.org.uk

That woman went home. It was Shabbat eve, and she found that her candle had already become extinguished. Her husband asked her: ‘Where have you been until now?’ She said to him: ‘I was listening to Rabbi Meir lecture.’ That man was a scoffer, and he said to her: ‘I swear, you will not enter my house until you go and spit in Rabbi Meir’s face.’ She left his house. Elijah, of blessed memory, appeared to Rabbi Meir, and said to him: ‘Because of you, that woman has left her house.’ Elijah, of blessed memory, informed him how the incident transpired. What did Rabbi Meir do? He went and sat in the great study hall. That woman came there to pray and he saw her. He pretended to have a sore [in his eye] and said: ‘Does anyone know how to cure an eye with a charm?’ That woman said to him: ‘I have come to cure by using charms.’ She spat in his face. *That was the cure for an eye sore. He said to her: ‘Say to your husband: I have spat in Rabbi Meir’s face.’ He said to her [further]: ‘Go and reconcile with your husband.’ See how great the power of peace is.

Hello, I was looking myself for Seckel pear trees to plant, and found out some interesting information I would like to share with you. The name of the pear originates from a rabbi and philosopher Sekl Löb Wormser (1768-1847), who lived in the city of Michelstadt, in Germany https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sekl_Loeb_Wormser . Aside from his numerous works on philosophy and successful medical treatment of lunatics, rabbi Sekl (himself a vegetarian) also liked to cultivate plants and in his garden he had a pear tree, which was known to grow very small pears. People in Michelstadt started to call those tiny pears as Sekl Löb Birne (=Sekl Löb pears), which later was shortened to Seklöbsbirn. The first registered information about the Secklöbsbirn are dated from 1847 and are kept at the Michelstadt city museum and in Darmstadt, at the archives of the local Association of Gardening and Landscape. This small pear was very popular and sold in the markets as Feigenbirne (Fig pears). In 1848, Europe entered into revolutionary mode and after these revolutions failed, many revolutionaries had to flee repression by the monarchist governments. Some of the revolutionaries, probably from Michelstadt, immigrated to the US and brought with them the Seklöbsbirn, which is known as Seckel pear in the US. The German sources I could find do not state that rabbi Sekl Löb was an specialist on fruit trees. He travelled widely, being a recognized philosopher and physician at the time, he probable found out the small pears by chance and brought some seeds home, which he planted in his garden. As an interesting information, there is a small pear variety called Bambinella, which originated from the island of Malta, in the Mediterranean. From Malta its cultivation spread to Italy and that is not too far from Southern Germany, where rabbi Löb lived. He lived in several cities in Germany and in 1825 he returned definitely to his home town, Michelstadt. He never travelled to Italy. Just as a wild guess…

And Rabbi Yitzḥak said: Anyone who recites Shema upon his bed, demons stay away from him. This is alluded to, as it is stated: “But man is born into trouble, and the sparks [reshef ] fly [uf ] upward” (Job 5:7). The verse is explained: The word fly [uf ] means nothing other than Torah, as Torah is difficult to grasp and easy to lose, like something that floats away, as it is stated: “Will you set your eyes upon it? It is gone; for riches certainly make themselves wings, like an eagle that flies into the heavens” (Proverbs 23:5). The word “sparks” means nothing other than demons, as it is stated: “Wasting of hunger, and the devouring of the sparks [reshef] and bitter destruction [ketev meriri], and the teeth of beasts I will send upon them, with the venom of crawling things of the dust” (Deuteronomy 32:24). Here we see reshef listed along with ketev meriri, both of which are understood by the Sages to be names of demons.

“To Seth, too, a son was born, and he called his name Enosh; then commenced [huḥal] the proclaiming of the name of the Lord” (Genesis 4:27). “To Seth, too, a son was born, and he called his name Enosh.” They asked before Abba Kohen Bardela: [Why does the Torah mention] Adam, Seth, Enosh, and then fall silent? He said: Until here [Enosh] they were in the image and in the likeness [of God]. From here on, the generations became corrupted and were created in a deformed state. Four matters changed during the days of Enosh son of Seth: The mountains became rocky ground; the dead began bringing forth worms; people’s faces became ape-like; and they became devalued [ḥullin] before malevolent spirits. Rabbi Yitzḥak said: It was they themselves who caused themselves to become devalued before the malevolent spirits, [as they declared:] ‘What is the difference between one who bows to an idol and one who bows to a person?’ *Just as one may bow to a person greater than oneself, so, too, they concluded, one may bow to an idol in the image [tzelem] of a person.
The generation of Enosh were thus the first idol worshippers, and the punishment for their folly was not delayed long. God caused the sea to transgress its bounds, and a portion of the earth was flooded. This was the time also when the mountains became rocks, and the dead bodies of men began to decay. And still another consequence of the sin of idolatry was that the countenances of the men of the following generations were no longer in the likeness and image of God, as the countenances of Adam, Seth, and Enosh had been. They resembled centaurs and apes, and the demons lost their fear of men.
Adam was created in the likeness and the image of God, as was Adam's son Seth, and Seth's son, Enosh. But after that the resemblance came to an end, and the generations became corrupt. Beginning with Enosh, humans came to practice magic and divination, and the art of controlling the heavenly forces. Before long, their faces became apelike and they became vulnerable to demons. They had all manner of intercourse with humans and beasts, and that is when centaurs came into being. So too did people begin to gather gold, silver, and all kinds of precious gems, and with them they constructed idols, and prayed to them. They even used the Name of God for sacrilegious purposes. This myth demonstrates a kind of devolution in which men become corrupt and regress into beastlike beings. The sexual sins listed here, as well as the use of black magic, and the lust for possessions are offered to justify God's decision to destroy the generation of the Flood. Although the centaur, half man, half horse, is a figure out of Greek mythology, here its existence is explained as the product of human intercourse with beasts and as further evidence of the kind of sin that led God to the decision to destroy all life on earth except for Noah and his family and the animals on the ark. It is likewise taught in a baraita that Abba Shaul says: I used to be a gravedigger. Once a burial cave opened up underneath where I was standing, and I found myself standing in the eye socket of a corpse until my nose. When I came back and told this to the Sages, they said to me: It was evidently the eye of Absalom.
It is taught in a baraita that Abba Shaul says the following, and some say that Rabbi Yoḥanan said it: I used to be a gravedigger. Once I ran after a deer, and I entered the thighbone of a corpse; and it was so large that I ran after the deer for three parasangs inside the thighbone, and although I did not reach the deer, the thighbone did not end. When I came back and related this to the Sages, they said to me: It was evidently the thighbone of Og, king of Bashan, a known giant.

One motzo'ay Shabbos, while Reb Shaya'le was eating this special melave malka meal, a chossid came to him with an urgent request. He was a man who had a warehouse full of foodstuffs and he made his living by buying an selling food. For the past number of months, his warehouse had been taken over by mice who were eating his grain and other commodities and his entire livelihood was threatened. He asked Reb Shaya'le for a blessing that the mice should leave his warehouse. At that time, each small town in Europe was ruled by the local church pastor. Some of the pastors were kind towards the Jews and others were very harsh. Reb Shaya'le asked the chossid if the pastor of the town he lived in was kind or harsh. The chossid replied that he was very harsh toward the Jews. Reb Shaya'le then instructed the chossid to go to his warehouse and to tell the mice, "Reb Shaya'le says to go to the estate of the pastor." The chossid followed the Rebbe's advice and instantly hundreds of mice raced out of the warehouse all heading in the direction of the pastor's estate. The chossid's business was saved and ever since Jews who have been plagued with this problem have used Reb Shaya'le's picture to accomplish the ridding of mice from their homes.
