There’s an endless list of television shows that were cancelled before completing their story, but it’s unforgivable that Our Flag Means Death is one of them. The HBO Max original pirate comedy starring Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi may have been doomed to arrive at Davy Jones’ Locker before it was ready to go, but that hasn’t stopped the series from amassing a loyal cult following.

Vince Gilligan's Apple Series 'Pluribus' Sets Premiere Date & Cast; Rhea Seehorn Photo & Video Revealed By Rosy_Cordero July 25, 2025 12:00pm Vince Gilligan's (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul) new Apple TV+ sci-fi series Pluribus, starring Rhea Seehorn, is set to premiere on Friday, November 7. The remaining seven episodes will air every Friday through December 26. Pluribus is a genre-bending original in which the most miserable person on Earth must save the world from happiness. In addition to Seehorn, the series stars Karolina Wydra (Sneaky Pete) and Carlos-Manuel Vesga (Donde TĂş Quieras), and guest stars Miriam Shor (American Fiction) and Samba Schutte (Our Flag Means Death).

3) Our Flag Means Death (Max, 2022-2023) A show that sailed onto our screens hot and was canceled just as quickly, Our Flag Means Death built a passionate fanbase in record time. The Taika Waititi-produced series turned the pirate genre on its head with a queer love story, found family themes, and a rich world that balanced silliness with soul.
ScreenRant: I did want to ask you really briefly about Our Flag Means Death, which did not receive a third season. Would you revisit the show? Or if there was a revival, would you come back? Rhys Darby: Oh, of course! Of course. But I'm pretty sure that ship has sailed. You know, we've been trying to rehoist those flags for a while, and yeah. It's just the way the world is right now, I guess. It just doesn't seem to be happening. But of course! I'm always open. That was a fantastic character that I enjoyed playing. So yeah, always open to anything.
9) Our Flag Means Death Our Death Now, we have hit you pretty hard with some dark and intense series to watch, so lets calm it down. This pirate comedy-romance from creator David Jenkins and executive producer Taika Waititi took viewers by surprise with its heartfelt story and inclusive humor. Our Flag Means Death follows the real-life-inspired character of Stede Bonnet played by Rhys Darby. Though this version is very much fictionalized as we watch Bonnet become an aristocrat-turned-pirate, and his budding relationship with the infamous Blackbeard (Waititi).
OUR FLAG MEANS DEATH (2 SEASONS) Our Flag Means Death wasn't your traditional workplace comedy. For starters, it was about pirates traversing the high seas looking to plunder some riches. But to be fair, that is their workplace. Using actual historical pirates opposite fictional characters, creator David Jenkins had uncovered a treasure chest of one-liners and high-octane moments in this one-of-a-kind historical fiction. But this series, led by the incredible Rhys Darby-who played a former aristocrat who gave up his fortune to live a life of crime at sea-and Taika Waititi was cancelled before a highly anticipated season 3 could go into production.
