"I can certainly sit here and say those bills are not going to get a hearing, they're not going to move forward, and that's what I tell these parents, but it doesn't stop the concern that they feel for their children."

Excerpt from the book Humans: A Monstrous History by Dr Surekha Davies: There was and is still a lot at stake when attending to the monsters that communities make up and wall off. Lived experience does not always match documentation. Embodiment shapes the experience of people in the world, experiences that, through their inconsistencies, make earlier values and modes of monster-making visible. Monsters reveal how societies frequently apply the concepts of race, nation, and citizen inconsistently. In such regimes history textbooks and curricula in schools become separation narratives like those written by the medieval Norman Welsh writer Gerald of Wales. By dehumanizing parts of a community, these and other narratives can even be twisted into justifications for genocide. For whom do you feel empathy? How much? Empathy is a personal geog-raphy, a map of who matters to you and thus who is most human. Is it possible to make a whole, multicultural body politic with empathy for one another, without tension? One that celebrates rampant hybridity and the transcending of categories? Perhaps this is a process and a regular exercise to be built into civic and institutional and personal life rather than a judgment that happens once and for all time. Perhaps, if people keep at it, they might begin to see that there is beauty in monstrosity.

A hearing was held last week for HB 1380, the Safe Spaces, Strong Communities Act sponsored by Rep. Gregerson (D-33). This bill aims to protect people who are currently unsheltered by limiting local government regulations on the use of public spaces to only those that are objectively reasonable. Right now, many jurisdictions have taken advantage of last year's Supreme Court ruling that tore down protections against the criminalization of homelessness. Too many local jurisdictions are passing or acting on ordinances that criminalize homelessness - fining or punishing people for the act of trying to survive without shelter. HB 1380 is scheduled for a vote in the House Housing Committee on Tuesday, Jan. 28, at 4pm.
