"When Helena awoke that morning, it felt as if she had swallowed glass. Her brain floated in fog, struggling to form a coherent thought even as she sat up to take in the room around her. Plush sheets fell to her hips. Moonlight drifted in through a cracked window. Petrichor flooded her nose; she breathed the smell in deeply, hoping to dispel some of the lingering fog."
