Reading a series of articles about the sourcing and (legally required) destruction of books for LLM training purposes, and it's striking that we're expected to believe that LLMs are inevitable, that they represent the highest technological achievement in human history, that everyone will be at a massive "cognitive disadvantage" if you don't use them, while the reality is that they can't exist without constant herculean efforts to source purely human-created works in their millions. WE are the value and they are trying to extract it from us while hiding that fact.
The usual effects tend to include drought in Southeast Asia, heat waves in western Canada, a cooler American South, heavy rain in eastern Africa, and so on. But the stronger the El Niño, the less predictable it will be. The 1997-98 event, for instance, led to major flooding in California, a very severe drought in Indonesia, the worst tornado outbreak in Florida history up to that point, and pushed up global atmospheric temperatures by 1.5 degrees Celsius momentarily. What an even stronger one will do is anybody’s guess, but at a minimum it is highly likely to send global temperatures temporarily up past 2 degrees. Next year will likely be the warmest year in recorded history, and by a large margin. In that case, some kind of extreme weather is guaranteed all over the place.

During the fourth week of release, there was a viral Instagram post from the film’s art director (Sally Choi, who criticized being paid $6,741 and advocated for industry change on low-budget films). I know you didn’t produce the movie and aren’t responsible for writing checks. But I wondered if you have feelings about this. I have nothing but respect for the art department, and the work they did was extraordinary. Everybody on this film worked so hard and they deserve to be recognized. This movie was made for so little money that it’s typical that the only people who [directly] benefit from its financial success are the people who took on some sort of risk. But what I hope is that every person that worked really hard on this film will see opportunities to catapult their careers in ways that can be very financially fruitful for them — like what’s happening for me.
