Kikka no Chigiri (菊花の約, The Chrysanthemum Pledge) In Kikka no Chigiri, a warrior falls ill while trying to return from a mission on behalf of his lord and becomes dear friends with the man who nurses him back to health. He recovers and leaves for home, promising his friend to return on the day of the Chrysanthemum Festival. Upon arriving home, he discovers that his lord has been killed and his throne overtaken by a rival, to whom everyone, including his own cousin, has now switched their allegiance. Not wanting to serve the new lord, the warrior tries to leave to return to his friend but his cousin holds him prisoner. Rather than break his promise, he kills himself and returns to his friend on the day of the Chrysanthemum Festival as a ghost. Afterward, his friend travels to the warrior's home and lectures the cousin on loyalty before abruptly killing him in revenge for the death of his friend.

"You should be able to find something in the bottom drawer! It's going to be big but there are definitely some with drawstrings, that should help. Just take whatever looks like it'll work." He puts the kettle on and grabs a handful of paper towels to finish wringing out his hair, then stops. Oh shit. Jayce bolts for the bedroom. "Bottom left, Viktor! My bad, it's bottom le…" He's too late. Viktor is bent at the waist with the bottom right drawer open, because of course with fifty fifty odds this is how Jayce's life would go, that Viktor would open that drawer first. In his hand is a piece of clothing Jayce recognizes immediately. He can even conjure the feeling of it in his hand; after all, that's what he has it for. Soft and smoother than it looks, the bralette is a shade of forget me not blue that took Jayce's breath away when he first saw it. It's doing the same thing now, or rather, something similar in that he's finding it incredibly hard to breathe. The silence stretches uncomfortably on as Viktor stands up straight, still holding the bralette. His expression is tight as he turns it over in his hands. His knuckles are white where he grips it, then he practically throws it back into the drawer.

He'd attributed Jayce's somewhat unkempt appearance today to being unshaven but no, there's something else, too. He sets the razor to the edge of Jayce's sideburn then looks down at him carefully. He's closed his eyes again, so Viktor cleans up the edge then leans in just a little, just the slightest amount because this is very certainly the weirdest thing he has ever done with Jayce and that's saying a lot… And sniffs at his hair.

After that came the first meeting with his now current roommate, Viktor. Possibly the most beautiful man Jayce had ever seen, and a study in the unexpected. Viktor, who was soft spoken but far from deferential. Who explained that the QR code was accessibility and ease of use for applicants. Who made Jayce recite his undergrad and graduate educational history before he even asked why he was looking for the room. Who insisted that if a choice had to be made in the event of a fire, he would choose his cat over his roommate every time not out of malice or misanthropy but because he expected his roommate to be wholly self-sufficient. (Who didn't ask why Jayce would bring up the possibility of a fire in the first place.) He knew exactly what he was looking for in a roommate and Jayce was convinced when he left the meeting that there was no way he met Viktor's standards. He certainly couldn't expect his current roommate to give him a very good reference, after all, but at least he had Cait to fall back on. Cait, who received a grateful text with way too many emojis when Viktor emailed him the next day to say the room was his if he still wanted it.

He's never heard that tone from him before. There's a purr in his voice, genuine curiosity curling around it but in a way that made it all dark and soft like smoke. He blinks a couple of times and tries to keep the butterflies in his stomach as still as he can. This is a normal roommate interaction, this might not mean anything. "Uh. Cleaning the oven?" "I was unclear. Why are you doing what you are doing down there?" The butterflies are out of their cocoons and slamming about wildly, moving from his stomach to his chest. Maybe Viktor just woke up and that's why his voice is so low like that. Maybe he's annoyed about the noise Jayce is making and that's why his tone is so deliciously patient, like he's trying to make a child explain themselves. "Because it needed to be done? You said the other day that you couldn't see how your pizza was doing so I figured cleaning the oven would help. I was also thinking, we could set up a camera that sees through the window so you don't have to bend down to look, you can just monitor it from your phone. Do you think that'd help?" Jayce knows he's rambling but he can't help it. The longer he talks, the less time Viktor will spend talking, and the less Jayce will have to think about how that talking makes him feel.
The gait lab turned out to be a bigger place than Jayce expected, but it wasn't hard to find Viktor. He was slouched in his desk chair, one leg perched on the edge and the other extended straight out before him. His attention was locked on a recording of a pair of legs alongside a set of readings Jayce couldn't follow. Once he leaned forward to make notes, then settled in again. Jayce waited for a moment to see if Viktor would acknowledge him but even when he cleared his throat the only recognition he got was a slight beckoning motion. "Sit, I am almost done." Jayce grabbed a nearby stool and pulled it up alongside Viktor, peering with him at the screen. The readings were of force applied to joints, it seemed, with a focus on the hip. Beyond that, though, it was a mystery, so instead he redirected his attention to the man sitting beside him. Thick chestnut hair with a layer of blond underneath, clearly wavy and long enough to hang past his chin but for now held up with a thoroughly bitten pencil. A sharp nose, equally sharp cheekbones, but eyes that looked both tired and soft. The tips of some kind of tattoo showed above the collar of his shirt, geometric and dark, and while it was impossible to tell if they continued the entire way down the fact that the design matched what he saw on Viktor's right wrist and the back of his hand made it seem pretty likely. "You are staring." Viktor's tone was conversational but with a hint of curiosity. His eyes never left his screen but Jayce still felt scrutinized. "Ah, sorry. I just didn't realize engineering was big enough for there to be anyone I haven't seen at least once." That was a perfectly normal thing to say, right? Viktor snorted softly. "While I hope you don't mean to make me feel invisible, I assure you our paths have crossed."

A handwritten page of fanfiction, written in virtually illegible handwriting and purple ink. "Winter here is, Viktor has learned, a special kind of hell. The air is painfully dry which means when it snows it's the kind of tiny crystals that make one understand why skiers call it powder. It also makes one understand why it's so hard to get glitter out of anything once it's been dispersed: no matter what you do it refuses to stay put. This is why Viktor finds himself texting Jayce late into the night on Thursday to warn him he won't be able to meet him for their usual Friday morning session. He's going to be trapped inside at least briefly. He was lucky to get an apartment on the ground floor of a duplex. The landlord lives above upstairs and it's been a very comfortable arrangement; he works nights so he and Viktor rarely cross paths and Viktor's nights are quiet and uninterrupted, as are the landlord's days while Viktor is at school or the lab. Occasionally, however, it presents problems, and this is one of them. Viktor is incapable of shoveling himself out but usually [LandlordName] is home in time for him to do it and still allow Viktor to make it to morning classes. Tonight, however, he's texted that he intended to ride out the storm at the hospital with the expectation that classes would be cancelled. They are but that didn't cancel Viktor's standing appointment with Jayce."
