This decision is an affront to constitutional rights, common sense, and the wellbeing of our communities. It also undermines the legal system as a whole and the ability of federal courts to put a check on presidential power in particular. However, the Supreme Court did not rule on the issue of birthright citizenship itself. We will continue to work with partners and communities across the country to challenge both unjust immigration policies and authoritarianism more broadly. We will be in congress, in the courts, in our communities, and in the streets working for a world where democracy is upheld and our families are not torn apart. Our communities are stronger and safer with immigrants.

Early this morning, Israel launched airstrikes against Iran, targeting locations across the country. Israel’s unilateral attack represents a significant escalation, threatening regional and global security. In the last week alone, Israel has continued its genocidal campaign in Gaza, bombed Yemen and Syria, and relentlessly attacked Lebanon in violation of the ceasefire agreement.

The ban also puts restrictions on people from Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela. This order will separate families, exile U.S. residents traveling abroad, and prevent students and workers from traveling to the U.S. It will also likely stoke xenophobia and discrimination against Muslims, immigrants, and people of color.

This comes a week after two Israeli Embassy staffers were shot and killed in Washington, DC. As a Quaker organization, AFSC firmly opposes violence in all its forms. Over the same week, Israel escalated airstrikes on Palestinians in Gaza. On Sunday the Israeli military opened fire on starving people waiting for food, killing more than 30 and injuring dozens more. The invasion of a house of worship and repression of activists and civil society is part of a disturbing global trend. Black graphic with white text that reads: This weekend, President Trump invoked the Alien Enemies Act, previously used during World War II to force people of Japanese, German, and Italian ancestry into internment camps. Now Trump plans to use the Act for the immediate deportation of people without any court process and in violation of their human rights. A federal judge temporarily blocked the use of the Act, but the Trump Administration defied the judge and sent more than a hundred Venezuelans to El Salvador to fulfill Trump’s $6 million deal for incarceration abroad. AFSC worked vigorously to challenge internment during WWII, and we will continue to organize against all forms of detention and deportation now.

This means that starting in August, 500,000 Haitians living in the U.S. will no longer be protected from deportation. As a Quaker organization, we welcome everyone with dignity and respect – no exceptions. Ending temporary protected status – for Haitian immigrants or anyone – takes away one of the few pathways available for immigrants seeking legal status in the U.S. Instead of tearing apart our communities, political leaders should be building an immigration system that is accessible and humane for all.

The order calls for the deportation of students involved in protests and instructs the Justice Department to aggressively prosecute pro-Palestinian activists. This is a clear infringement on freedom of speech and expression, which are essential components of democracy. It is imperative to defend these rights not only because we support anti-genocide activism but because of the potential ramifications for civil society as a whole. For the past 15 months, millions of people – of all religions, races, and backgrounds – have taken to the streets in the U.S. to demand a permanent ceasefire and an arms embargo on Israel. Under the guise of stopping antisemitism, the Trump administration is ignoring the very real antisemitism that overwhelmingly comes from white nationalist extremists who target both anti-Zionist Palestinian and Jewish activists. As a Quaker organization that has worked for decades to support peace and justice in Palestine and around the world, we strongly oppose this order and any effort to persecute and silence those speaking out against injustice. And we will continue to work in solidarity with student movements and call for an end to genocide and occupation.
