Work and careers are at the crosswind of change. Increased job insecurity and nonstandard employment relations, new forms of work – such as platform and gig work– and emerging new technologies with requirement for new skills, are just some of the current trends that are reshaping working life. At the same time, global turmoil and demographic changes, such as population ageing and immigration, add to uncertainties in the labour market. These changes may have wide-reaching consequences not only for work and careers, but also, for example, for workers’ (mental) health, social security, and inten-tions to start a family. Working life needs to adapt to a changing environment and workers need to adapt to a changing working life. In addition, changes affect different population groups unequally. Altogether, this poses particular challenges for social policy to design innovative solutions, to manage change effectively, and ensure a functional and socially just labour market. In this working group, we will explore the current changes in working life and the challenges it poses to individuals, workplaces and society. We will examine how these changes contribute to social inequalities. Who are the most affected and what can social policy – including labour market, education, health, pension, and family policies – do to protect the economic wellbeing and health especially of the most vulnerable groups? We invite presentations that explore and analyse recent and ongoing changes in working lives and labour markets, as well as their consequences and the policies to address them. We welcome both theoretical and empirical studies across disciplinaries. Presentations can be held in Finnish or in English.

Screen shot of the abstract of the article: Every year, a significant number of people in Finland retire on a disability pension. Half of them are granted a temporary disability pension. Our study examines the different pathways into and out of temporary disability retirement and analyses how individual-level factors are associated with these pathways. We used comprehensive register data on Finns aged 30–58 who received a temporary disability pension in 2018 and followed them for 4 years before and after their pension claim. Sequence analysis in combination with clustering was used to identify typical patterns in and out of temporary disability pension. In addition, we examined the association between individual-level factors and the observed pathways. We identified nine distinct clusters with unique pathways. Two-thirds of the study population belonged to five clusters in which receipt of a disability pension continued for several years. The majority had been employed before receiving the pension. Only 18% belonged to a single cluster characterized by return to work, while persons in the remaining three clusters (20%) ended up in unemployment or unknown labour market states. The different pathways also differed by individual-level factors. We identified several different pathways into and out of temporary disability pensions. Most of them were characterized by long-term disability retirement rather than return to work. A better understanding of these pathways and associated individual factors is crucial to developing more effective strategies to facilitate return to work and prevent long-term disability.
Abstract: This chapter discusses the literature with respect to the role of employers in the retirement processes of older workers and provides suggestions for future research. The first part of the chapter reviews existing theoretical insights regarding the employers’ actions and attitudes toward older workers and retirement. The next section discusses empirical findings with regard to age-related stereotypes in the workplace and age norms with respect to retirement, and presents some results from an international comparative employer study. The chapter concludes with a section on the management of retirement processes, focusing on the exit and hiring of older workers.

What is light entrepreneurship? Light entrepreneurship is often described as a form of work in which the person who does the work is the customer of an invoicing service company. The worker does not have to establish a business. Light entrepreneurship can be used for platform or gig work, but it is not platform work in and of itself. According to Finnish legislation, light entrepreneurship does not have an official labour market status. Light entrepreneurs are either in an employment relationship or self-employed persons. When a light entrepreneur is a self-employed person, they are liable to take out pension insurance themselves.
