Bob`s mouth opened and closed but no words formed; he
looked like a guppy fish who had joined a choir but didn’t
know any of the words. The grilling continued.
“…you only bothered to phone us at eight-am to clarify
the start time - one hours’ notice!”
“In my defence, the band were all up and about anyway.”
Bob responded - it was a weak retort - factually correct but
a complete dead end for this particular argument. Sophie
snapped back at him without hesitating.
“Of course we were up and about - we hadn’t even been
to bed, no thanks to you.” Although many months had
passed she was still annoyed about this fact.
Now realising his line of defence was like watching a
recently opened can of worms lose its contents, Bob began
to shrink down into his shoulders. The reason why the entire
band were available at that unorthodox hour filtered back
into his consciousness.
“Oh yes. You were traveling back from that summer
solstice gig at Stonehenge.” came the meek reaction. Sophie
become further agitated.
“Another of your zany gigs; a swing band at a Hippy
convention!”
Bob went quiet. Sophie shouted.
“We stood out like an elephant farting in a duck pond.”
