Massive Water Consumption: Facilities require millions of gallons for cooling systems, causing intense water usage concerns, especially in drought-prone areas. Even facilities utilizing dry cooling still face complaints regarding intense, constant fan noise and residual heat. Environmental & Noise Pollution: Residents living near mega-campuses often complain about relentless industrial noise and local air pollution emitted by on-site diesel generators or natural gas turbines.
When someone complains about data centers today, they are rarely objecting to cloud storage. Instead, they are protesting the rapid, often clandestine expansion of massive server farms built to train and run artificial intelligence (AI) models. The backlash is largely driven by these core issues: Soaring Electricity Costs: Data centers consume vast amounts of electricity, and communities fear this competition for energy will cause their own utility rates to rise. Exceprt from book: Question: How do you feel about being called in for your racist behavior? How will you actively listen instead of defending your actions? Don't fall into the trap that you don't need to learn from your mistakes. It's tempting to quickly apologize and say, "I understand what I did. Let's just move on." Ally ship doesn't work that way. You learn by meticulously moving through the process of understanding why you exhibited racist behavior and how to make amends for the pain you caused. That's why I keep reporting how important it is to have an affinity group or accountability partner who can help you understand where you went wrong. That's how you progress as an ally. Don't be afraid to make mistakes. You can expect to make numerous missteps on your journey to becoming an ally.
