Bischoff ~1 minute Updated June 1, 2026, 6:07 p.m. ET The Ohio State Highway Patrol arrested online political writer D.J. Byrnes, also known as The Rooster, at the statehouse on June 1 on a misdemeanor warrant. A patrol spokesman said Byrnes, who posts his stories to his Substack subscribers, was arrested on an outstanding warrant. He was booked into the Franklin County Jail, records show. The patrol did not provide further details. Byrnes' colleague, Max Littman, said he believes the arrest is related to Byrnes texting photos of cartoon character Shrek's penis to a state senator. "If that is in fact true, that he was arrested over that, then it's blatant targeting a political opponent and journalist," Littman said.

The Columbus Education Association, the Union representing nearly 4,500 educators in Columbus City Schools, issued the following statement today in response to Columbus City Council's planned vote tonight on an agreement related to a bid for a new National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) team that has been submitted by investors including the Haslam Sports Group, Drs. Pete and Chris Edwards, and Nationwide Realty Investors LLC: "445 Columbus City Schools educators and support staff positions are being eliminated this year due to budget cuts while the billionaire Haslams demand $25 million more of city taxpayers' money" said John Coneglio, CEA President. "It's outrageous, and it should be unanimously rejected, City Council should not be in the business of starving our kids of public resources to pad billionaires' bank accounts." As if extracting millions in additional taxpayer money wasn't bad enough, the City Council legislation to be voted on tonight includes handing over to the investment group McCoy park, one of the few city parks on the South Side. Previously, Columbus taxpayers contributed more than $50 million for improvements related to a new Columbus Crew stadium. In 2025, the Haslams were given $600 million in state taxpayer funds for a new Cleveland Browns stadium. Shortly thereafter, the Haslams purchased a new $25 million mansion ir Florida. The building of a new Columbus Crew stadium came with the promise of a new sports facility in the Linden area that would be open to the community. That promise was not kept. Enough is enough. We are gravely concerned that American people will needlessly suffer and die as a result of policies that turn away from sound interventions. After careful consideration, we insist on Kennedy's resignation to restore the integrity, credibility and science-driven mission of HHS and all its agencies. Our country needs leadership that will promote open, honest dialogue, not disregard decades of lifesaving science, spread misinformation, reverse medical progress and decimate programs that keep us safe. We are speaking out because protecting public health is our responsibility as physicians, scientists and patient advocates. It is also the responsibility of our elected officials, and we call for their support at this critical moment to protect the health of the nation. It is time to reverse course and begin rebuilding the public health infrastructure overseen by CDC. Kennedy has proven himself unwilling and ill-prepared to lead that effort.

Abstract This paper examines the effects of dollar store entry on independent grocery retailers in the United States between 2000 and 2019. We utilized an establishment-level dataset comprising all grocery retailers and dollar stores in the country. Our findings indicate that dollar store entry is associated with a 5.7% decrease in sales, a 3.7% reduction in employment, and a 2.3% rise in the likelihood of independent grocery retailers quitting the business. These adverse entry effects are three times larger in rural than urban areas. Event studies indicate that the negative impact on sales and employment disappears gradually in urban areas but persists in rural communities. We document differences in treatment effects of dollar store entry across regions, retail formats, and time.
