1/6 Amanda Turtle Barfield The First Two Months of This Presidency Have Been a Disaster for Marginalized People-Including Me. I'm neurodivergent, neuroqueer, and have multiple incurable chronic illnesses. I rely on a team of doctors and specialists to help me manage my health-key word: help. They can't cure me (shocking, I know), but without them, I'd be in even worse shape. Unfortunately, under this administration, my access to care is in danger-along with the rights and well-being of so many others. The GOP, with an enthusiastic assist from some Democrats, is hacking away at protections, social supports, and safety nets like a horror movie

Project 2025 and the proposed $800 billion cuts to Medicaid and Medicare could make it harder-if not impossible-for people like me to get life-sustaining healthcare. Social Security is on the chopping block. The Department of Education is being dismantled, so if your kid has an IEP, like mine, good luck. SNAP, Head Start, and every other program that keeps working-class, and disabled people from starving or freezing? Let's just say they're not high on the priority list. Do you know what is high on the priority list, beyond robbing citizens of the benefits of the social safety nets everyone pays into? Raising the debt ceiling. Yes, the party of "fiscal conservatism" is not only prepared to slash programs that benefit
3/6 average people, but also to add trillions to the deficit in order to renew deep tax cuts for the wealthiest 10% that expire this year. And then there's the executive branch, which has basically turned into Trump's personal revenge tour. He fired thousands of career specialists across federal agencies, replacing them with underqualified loyalists whose main credentials seem to be a willingness to say yes, sir and a complete lack of shame. Scientists, policy experts, and administrators who actually understood how to run essential programs? Gone. Instead, we've got grifters, extremists, and sycophants dismantling everything from
4/6 environmental protections to civil rights enforcement. If you thought the first Trump presidency was bad, this one has all the authoritarianism without the inconvenience of legal guardrails. Meanwhile, the U.S. has noped out of the U.N. Human Rights Council, because apparently human rights are just too much for our government to handle. People with green cards are being deported over free speech, foreign nationals are vanishing into detention centers, and billionaires like Elon Musk are running a shadow government (DOGE, the so-called Department of Government Efficiency, is just the latest way to pretend mass firings are "reform").
5/6 And let's be clear-none of this is happening in a vacuum. Trump didn't just enable white supremacist groups; he embodied their ideology and gave them power. The people behind these policies aren't accidentally targeting the most vulnerable-they are intentionally waging war on anyone who isn't wealthy, white, cis, straight, and male. This administration isn't failing marginalized people; it's actively making our lives worse on purpose. And if you're watching all of this unfold thinking, Well, that's terrible, but it doesn't really affect me-you might want to rethink that. The erosion of rights, the normalization of authoritarian policies, and the consolidation of power by billionaires and bad actors never stop with just one group.
6/6 Speak up. Pay attention. Support those who are being harmed. Before we're all stuck on some dystopian farm, pulling weeds for "wellness."
