Pane 1: Jan 13, 1930. Nazi SA Officer Horst Wessel was shot in his Berlin apartment by a local communist. He would die of sepsis on Feb 23. Pane 2: Goebbels used his media connections and know-how to turn the man into a martyr for the Nazi party. Wessel's flaws were erased and his virtues were exaggerated—or invented from nothing. Pane 3: Wessel was regularly cited as a hero within the Nazi Party, and a marching song Wessel had written became the anthem of the Nazi Party.
