Graphs of Film Genre Popularity from 1910-2021. Western popularity bottoms out between 1960 and 1980 and remains flatlined. Sci Fi popularity picks up in 1950 and grows spikily. Of course, Action, War, Romance, Musicals, Horror, Thriller, Crime, Comedy, Documentary, Fantasy are also listed and it's not a 1-1 relationship between Western/Sci Fi I just have always noticed some Western themes in some genres of Sci Fi. Sci Fi and Fantasy arguably borrow from several of the other genres listed on a regular basis.
