"You know what I mean, Miller. We're married on paper, sure, but this isn't real. Still, tonight was..." I want to say amazing. Intoxicating, and not only because of the wine. The best date I've been on in years. But that would be excessive, so I look down at the lake before I continue my answer... "fun. I think Patrick’s dating plan is a good one. We should keep up with it." "Well, he did pick the perfect date for us to start. April twenty-fifth. Not too hot, not too cold." "Shame I forgot my light jacket," I tell him with a laugh. Then, before I can react, he reaches out and puts his right hand under my chin, tilting my head up towards his face. He starts to lean in and my heart starts racing. I should be disgusted by this. I hate Aiden Miller. I do. I did. So why isn't this repulsing me? Why is my body sending signals my brain can't process? Why, as his lips get closer to mine, am I not pulling away? God, I am never drinking Pinot Grigio again. I close my eyes, half hoping that when I open them I'll be awake in my bed and this will all have been some kind of terrible nightmare, and half hoping that when I open them, his lips will be on mine.

I look up at him, the way he's framed by the moonlight, and I realize he's not the worst person to be forced to be in a relationship with. He's ridiculously handsome, with that chiseled jawline, those unnaturally high cheekbones for a man, those piercing blue eyes, that... Wow, okay, I'm feeling the wine way more than I thought. Get it together, Gen. Aiden Miller is not hot. Cute, maybe, in an annoyingly perfect way. But he doesn't strike me as the type of guy to rip off my dress, pin me up against a wall, and... oh, God...

The elevator door opens and we walk down the hallway to our room. I unlock the door and hold it open for Gen, who immediately drops her bags in the entryway as my jaw drops. "Oh, you fucking set this up, didn't you, Miller?!" I did not. Oh, I thought about it, trust me, but I assumed it'd be a terrible idea, and based on Gen's intensely negative reaction to the situation staring us in the face, that instinct was correct. "Gen, I specifically booked a deluxe room with two double beds, not one king." "Oh, c'mon," she says, her face flushed with a mix of anger and embarrassment. "Every single one of your beloved Madison Blair novels has this. There's only one bed. Or one tent. Or one sleeping bag. Or one igloo. And of course the man and the woman fuck, because that's the only thing that can happen when two adults share a bed."

"You... have... a cat?" Aiden asks. "Why is that such a surprise?" I ask back, scratching Tess under her chin. She flops down and exposes her belly to me and I start rubbing it. "You just don't seem like the caretaker type." "I'm not," I say, turning my attention back to Aiden. "Tess takes care of me." Then I turn back to Tess and break out the baby voice I use when I'm playing with her. "Don't you Tessie-poo. Yes you do. You're a good kitty." I hear Aiden snort as he tries to stifle a laugh. "You breathe a word of this to anyone, Miller, and I'll let Tessa Purrtue whip out her claws on your face." "Wait... your cat's name is... Tessa Purrtue?"

Looking at this sad state of affairs, you'd think I was the one who'd gotten hurt, not Anastasia. I'm sure her fridge is fully stocked. That's not an assumption; I've been making sure she's getting groceries delivered to her apartment so she doesn't have to go out. She'll be in a wheelchair for a couple more weeks, which makes things extra difficult for her since her apartment is on the third floor of her building. I offered to let her stay with me, since I'm on the first floor here and have the spare bedroom, but she wasn't up for that. I've been trying to give her the space she needs -- I know this is significantly harder on her than it is on me -- but I feel like I haven't just lost my skating partner, I've lost my best friend too. I can't dwell on that now though, because if I start thinking about it I'll end up wallowing again, and I can't wallow without snacks. I pull out my phone to place a DoorDash order and as soon as I do I hear a knock at my door. I knew delivery services were getting faster these days, but this has to be a new record.
She proceeds to take her skates -- her $1,100 Edea Pianos with the $900 John Wilson Revolution blades -- around to every skater in the room and gets them signed, before handing them over to Evie. "This way," Gen says, "you can take your skates back on the ice without worrying about messing up any of the autographs." Evie starts bouncing up and down with excitement, and her mom wipes her eyes and thanks Gen for such a generous gift. Gen then signs one of the photos too, turns it over, and writes her phone number on the back before handing it to Evie's mother. "If she has any more problems at the rink, text me, and I'll take care of it." "Miss Cartier, I couldn't possibly..." "It's Genevieve, and I'm not asking."

"My problem," she says, turning back to me and throwing the bouquet to the ground, "is that I got married to someone I've spent my whole life trying to beat, and now even if I get the gold medal I want, I have to share it with him, and the whole world is going to see these stupid pictures and see us skate together and imagine what we're doing behind closed doors and even though we won't be doing any of that, it fucking bothers me, okay?" Patrick starts to walk over toward us and I run my hand back and forth across my neck to signal to him to stay right where he is.
"I'm kinda chilly to be honest," he says. "Then again, I'm not the one who had four glasses of wine at dinner." He smiles at me. I laugh and playfully slap him on the chest, then drape my arms around his shoulders and kick up my right leg. As soon as I hear the telltale click of the shutter on Georgina's cameraphone, I drop my grip. "I had three glasses," I clarify. "No, you had four," Aiden says. I close my eyes and think, and I think he might be right. Shit. Well, at least that helps explain why he suddenly looks so attractive to me. Alcohol has always been my kryptonite when it comes to hooking up. I shudder to think about the time I did tequila shots after a Grand Prix in Finland and ended up in bed between two members of a Finnish ice dance team. At least they didn't speak English or French, so it made ghosting them in the morning relatively easy. I can't exactly do that with Aiden, not if I want that gold medal.
"It's sexual orientation, not preference. If you're going to be married to a bi woman, even fake married, you need to get the language right." "Sorry," Anastasia says. "I'll try to be a better Ally." "It's fine, Anastasia, I'm used to this bullshit." "Stacy! If you're married to my bestie, you need to call me Stacy!" She's a grown woman who uses the word "bestie." I cannot. I don't want to be "besties" or even friends with her. Though if I'm being honest with myself, befriending her would up my friend count to... well, one. I was so focused on competing throughout my skating career, from the time I was a little kid, that I never really developed friendships. I'd considered Peter my friend when we were skating together, but we haven't spoken in more than two years.
I start to get up from the couch to make my way to my bedroom but Gen reaches out and stops me. "Aiden, you look fine," she says. And looking in her eyes, those incredible green eyes, I feel like she might actually be telling the truth. But "fine" isn't nearly good enough next to her. "At least let me throw on a tie." "No." She reaches up to my shirt, where my top button is already undone, and pops the second one open as well, pulling the sides apart to show off more of my chest. "There, now your look is giving less 'high school teacher trying to be cool' and more 'sexy single dad.'" She tousles my hair too, giving it a bit more of a messy look than how I typically style it. "You look good, Miller. If I didn't know you, and wasn't already married to you, I might even consider hitting on you."
"THE SCORES PLEASE," I hear announced over the PA system, followed by the Chinese language speaker. I take Peter's right hand in my left. This is it. This is our moment. I don't speak Mandarin, so I can't react to the initial reading of the scores. But then the English language version comes in. "Genevieve Cartier and Peter Palmer have scored 149.75 points. They are currently in second place." No, I must have misheard them. That can't be right.
"Just slide into his DMs," Kloe advises me as she begins to change out of her outfit for the evening and into her pajamas. Meanwhile I'm still in Kloe's tube top and jeggings as I dive deeper and deeper into my Luc searches. "I'm not really a 'slide into the DMs' girlie. I'm more a 'hope a guy makes the first move after he strikes out with you' girlie." "Fine, I'll handle this." She drops her pajamas and walks over to my bed, completely nude. Before I can ask her to put some fucking clothes on, she snatches my phone out of my hand, quickly types something, and tosses it back to me.
