Title: Ethnocentrism and Partisan Polarization in the United States Abstract With groups central features of politics, group attitudes naturally relate to political decisions. But research often considers single identities, attitudes about either a given in-group or out-group, or ignores how people trade off in-group and out-group attitudes. To offer a more holistic understanding of the link between group outlooks and politics I turn to ethnocentrism, probing its connection with partisanship. I use race as a case to argue that the two parties’ positions vis-a-vis in-groups affect how ethnocentrism maps to party choice, demonstrating asymmetries by racial background: ethnocentric people of color (PoC) are Democrats and ethnocentric whites are Republicans. I then use panel data to test whether this links relate to ethnocentrism changing partisanship or partisanship changing ethnocentrism. Since 2011 I find evidence for ethnocentrism changing among PoC and for both paths among whites. I conclude with what these relationships say about party politics and group-centric thinking.
