Inorganic Hg (Hg²⁺) is deposited from the atmosphere and converted through redox reactions into elemental Hg⁰, which can escape to the atmosphere (evasion). Hg²⁺ also undergoes methylation into monomethylmercury (MMHg) and dimethylmercury (DMHg), with back-conversion via demethylation. MMHg and DMHg can diffuse between sediment and water, and resuspension returns buried Hg to the water column. Wind, tidal inflow, and ocean export influence water movement. The water column is divided into a mixed layer and a stratified bottom layer.
