This morning, I ran into a word I didn’t know: parochialism. I even had to look up how to pronounce it. It means a narrow focus on local concerns, often at the expense of the wider interest. That feels uncomfortably relevant to public sector work.

2/ We all have trees in front of us: the urgent file, the widget, the decision, the briefing note, the report, the piece of hardware. Those things matter. Government depends on people taking their specific responsibilities seriously.
