A private firm has a fairly clear north star in value for shareholders and customers. Public service is oriented around something harder to pin down: a duty to the public good.

2/ There's a lot of great writing on what that duty looks like, and last year I took my own stab at defining the purpose of the public sector (link below). What's been on my mind recently is a different question, though.
