Amplify Palestine has released a new VA compilation marking the 20th anniversary of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. Out on July 9th, Unboundable: BDS Mixtape Vol. 3 explores improvisation as a practice that permeates both work and activism. Across 13 tracks, the compilation spans jazz, Indian classical, Arabic music and avant electronica. "It's our responsibility as musicians to get louder," curator and contributor Sonny Singh said. While Batsheva is most widely known today for the choreographic work of Ohad Naharin (Artistic Director from 1990-2018 and current House Choreographer), Batsheva’s relationship with cultural imperialism originated much earlier. The company formed 16 years after Israel’s founding and was originally directed by American modern dance icon Martha Graham, whose international presence was supported by the US State Department. From the very beginning, Israel and its proponents viewed dance as a necessary component in establishing their cultural supremacy over Palestine,[3] much like the US’s vision of modern dance as a weapon in their worldwide campaign against communism.[4] Unsurprisingly, Batsheva has become a useful tool in Israel’s 21st-century Brand Israel strategy, launched in 2005 to revitalize the nation’s image, especially with Americans. The campaign explicitly and publicly aims to move Israel’s role in the international public imagination from violence and conflict towards art, culture, youth, and modernity, both through direct government funding and by incentivizing private companies.[5]

As we have seen, the military campaign that enforced these declarations of policy was prosecuted by the might of the British armed forces, with their main effort taking place in 1936–39, in response to the violent form taken by growing Palestinian resistance to British rule and to the colonial project supported by Britain. One of the clearest analyses of what was at stake at the time was offered by Vladimir Jabotinsky. Jabotinsky was the founder of the militant Revisionist wing of the Zionist movement, out of which grew the current Likud Party that since 1977 has dominated Israeli politics with few interruptions. (It is worth noting that the father of Benjamin Netanyahu, Benzion Netanyahu, whom the Israeli prime minister reveres, was Jabotinsky's private secretary.) Jabotinsky was explicit in stressing the need for what he called an “iron wall” of British bayonets if Zionism was to succeed. He frankly recognized that in “the history of colonization in other countries . . . every native population, civilized or not, regards its lands as its national home.... This is equally true of the Arabs.”10 It is well worth noting Jabotinsky's candid use of the terms “colonization” to describe Zionist activity, and “the native population” to describe the Palestinians. He concluded that overcoming the natural resistance of this population to their subjugation and displacement required an “iron wall, which is to say a strong power in Palestine that is not amenable to any Arab pressure.”11 Until it handed the Palestine question over to the United Nations in 1947, Great Britain provided the iron wall without which Jabotinsky freely admitted that Zionist colonization could not be successfully pursued.

Dr. Hossam Abu Safieh's son, Elias Abu Safieh, has shared an update regarding his father: Reports indicate that Dr. Hossam, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, is in critical condition due to severe torture. Despite no formal charges being filed, his detention has been extended until February 13, and he is prohibited from meeting with a lawyer until January 22. The family remains deeply concerned and still has no information about the reasons behind his arrest. International calls for his release are growing. He was recently transferred to Ashkelon Court after spending ten days in custody at Sedi Timan Prison. #HumanRights #FreeHossamAbuSafieh
I have come to regard Columbia Law School as a hostile work environment in which I can no longer enter the classroom, hold office hours, walk through the campus, or engage in faculty governance functions free from egregious and unwelcome harassment on account of my defense of students’ freedom to protest and express views that are critical of Israel’s treatment of Palestinians, treatment that is widely regarded by the most prominent human rights organizations nationally and globally as a genocide.

Academia in a time of genocide: scholasticidal tendencies and continuities Basma Hajir &Mezna Qato Received 11 Sep 2024, Accepted 18 Dec 2024, Published online: 02 Jan 2025 Abstract This essay takes up Edward Said’s insistence on truth, justice, and tracing continuities of colonial violence to reflect on the university in a time of genocide. We set the stage with an outline of the university complicities; conditions continuous with, and connected to, the ongoing genocide in Gaza. We establish the legal resonance of ‘scholasticide’ and use the term as an explanatory tool to unpack four key ‘scholasticidal tendencies’ that extend to the USA, UK, and European academies: silence, the suppression of solidarity, ‘complex’ or ‘nuanced’ arguments, and the threat posed by certain theories. We critique these tendencies and highlight their deflections, obfuscations, contradictions, and moral failings. We gesture to possibilities beyond them and towards justice as an answer to the ‘question of Palestine’.
