Memory involves brain activity at rest (especially in the DMN), while “storage” and “retrieval” involve different brain networks. So, we can test our hypotheses using individual differences: Does more forgetting show different resting-state brain activity in the storage or in the retrieval regions?

To answer this, you need *really good* assessments of memory function. But measuring memory is really difficult. Enter "computational phenotyping": we can inferr the speed at which different people forget information by fitting their data with a computational model.
