The Department of Atmospheric Sciences at Texas A&M University will host a one-day workshop to discuss coordination, development, and customization of impact-focused hazardous weather predictions for Texas. The workshop is aimed at both producers and consumers of weather forecasts across the state, including representatives from state and federal agencies, power utilities, and local authorities. The goal of the workshop is to identify both specialized and common needs relating to hazardous weather prediction. The workshop will be held at the Hilton College Station on Thursday, Sep. 24, 2026, immediately preceding the Texas Weather Conference scheduled for Sep. 25-26 at the same venue. The Analogy: Weather on Steroids To better understand the relationship between climate and weather, it is helpful to use an analogy: a baseball player who uses steroids. Steroids do not hit home runs; the player does. Similarly, climate change does not create a storm; the atmospheric system does. However, steroids can cause the player to hit the ball farther on average. The details of the particular swing represent intrinsic weather variability, while the steroids represent the systematic boost provided by a changing climate. Imagine a star player who sometimes hits home runs and sometimes hits fly balls that are caught. Now, the player begins taking steroids. On average, fly balls this play hits go further, so more of them go over the fence for a home run. Let’s now imagine the player hits a 410-foot home run in a particular at-bat. We can analyze this effect in two distinct ways, which directly parallel the two key questions of attribution science. 1. How Much More Likely

If you want to predict the future climate, you need me because I am an estimate of how much greenhouse gases human society will emit. Plug me into a climate model and I can tell you what the future climate will be. But predicting the future is hard. Because of this, the community of experts does not make a single prediction of how the future will evolve. Rather, I am one of a family of alternative scenarios my siblings and I are expected to span the range of plausible futures the world may experience over the next century or two.
