Not because it’s not true, no, it’s true, Cloud doesn’t love Sephiroth, it’s been true for years—it feels wrong that he still needs to remind himself. That he still needs to convince himself that he doesn’t love his tormentor, the one who refuses to set his soul free. That he still needs to assure himself that Sephiroth is a demon and doesn’t love him back. That this isn’t love, that this is obsession—and then there’s that small voice. That small fucking voice of a cadet in Cloud whispering, Sephiroth loves me? This is obsession, but he sees me? He killed everyone, isn’t this what we wanted? He won’t let us go, isn’t that what we want? He killed Mom, what… Why? He became a monster, no, that’s not him. It doesn’t matter, yes it does! Why would he ever do that? Why… No, he’s supposed to be not only a good person, he’s, he’s the best. He’s the reason I’m here! Why… No, I wouldn’t throw my life away. He wouldn’t ruin our life like that. No, he… “You still don’t understand yourself,” Sephiroth says, and Cloud hates this, hates his thoughts being heard, hates his stupid fucking thoughts. One of Sephiroth’s hands travels up to grip Cloud’s chin and force his gaze up to the mirror. The two make eye contact. “You’re lonely, aren’t you, puppet? You always have been. I can fix that. You’ll never be alone with your master.”

He must feel Zack’s burning stare, Zack knows it, but he’s dedicated. “I was an experiment from my very conception. A mixture of an alien and a mad scientist, raised to be a weapon. I’m a monster, Cloud. I hear your cries because they are mine, too.” Sephiroth reaches for Cloud in a way that makes Zack’s mouth go dry. Nothing is different about Sephiroth, but this feels all the more like rebellion, like…hope. “You’re allowed to choose what monster you are. If you choose to be a monster…I will give you my sword.” Sephiroth turns his chin up, his voice softer than Zack had ever heard it. It doesn’t feel like he’s just talking about Cloud, anymore. “But you can choose peace, Cloud.”
