Snippet from SYMBIOTE by Andria Kennedy: Pain: So sharp and overwhelming Gielle couldn’t catch her breath. Gielle’s throat worked to voice a scream. She looked down and saw rows of piercing teeth sunk deep into her left wrist. Irif bit harder, and Gielle’s arms dropped, boneless. Blood welled to the surface, staining her sleeve. She realized with fascinated horror that Irif was feeding from her. She wanted to wrench her arm away, but she didn’t dare. Those sharp teeth would shred her flesh. Irif’s jaws opened, and Gielle drew a sliver of breath. Then the teeth clamped down again. Tears blurred her vision. She choked on a scream of anguish. The bite of a Walker is venomous. Liquid flames danced in her veins, every nerve afire. The searing heat coiled through her chest, spiraling toward her brain. Skin rose in gooseflesh. Her fingers dug into her palm as her muscles pulled taut. Suddenly, the teeth released from her wrist. Her chest heaved with the need for air. She stared at the lines of blood seeping from the wound.

Snippet from OUBLIETTE by Andria Kennedy: This time, she stood in a clearing of blighted trees, their branches twisted and riddled with choking black vines. The cloying gray snow continued its ceaseless fall, and the ground was boggy beneath her feet, tar-black pools showing here and there among the twisted roots. The air was bitter cold, and she longed for the warmth of her wool cloak, hanging on the chair in her tent on the other side of the mirror. Tiny points of red and blue light began to gleam between the trees in clusters of twos and threes, and cackling howls whispered on the wind that snaked around her. She shuddered, stepping closer to the obsidian mirror propped awkwardly on a jagged stump in the center of the clearing. Ruby turned away from the glass, and Garnet felt a stab of panic. I forgot to set the terms for us to switch back, for her to return! She lifted her hand, poised to rap on the mirror and gain Ruby's attention when her body froze in horror. Through the glass, Ruby's face was painted in triumph, and she moved a large rock into position beneath the stand for the washbasin. With a violent jerk, Ruby pulled the mirror forward.

Snippet from OUBLIETTE by Andria Kennedy: Ruby was an imperfect mirror of Garnet and completely independent, born into the parallel world that existed on the opposite side of the ebony glass. While the two worlds reflected one another, Ruby's realm was completely devoid of any other living creature. She lived alone amid the shadows and gloom. The emptiness gave her the drive to be acknowledged and noticed, the very things that Garnet wished to avoid at all costs. Ruby was clever, and she never acted too brazenly to arouse suspicion. So long as no one glimpsed her full reflection in an ordinary mirror, they believed the two girls were one and the same. It was only in a true reflection that one saw the feral qualities in Ruby's eyes, and she worked subtly during her time in Garnet's world to enforce the belief that Garnet preferred not to look on her own image. In fact, Garnet's mother ordered all unnecessary mirrors removed from the palace in the hopes of comforting her awkward daughter. I should have known she resembled a predator, Garnet thought, idly turning the pages of her journal.

Snippet from SYMBIOTE by Andria Kennedy: Palito pulled her closer, grabbing the tonat from the bed. His fingers dug into her elbow. “An attack,” he said grimly. “We need to get to the blockade room.” She stared at him in disbelief. She’d noticed the blockade room at the back of the estate when they’d arrived—noticed and promptly dismissed it. Every diplomatic manse boasted the reinforced structure, built to withstand an armed assault. The royal quarters in the palace were built upon similar designs. But no one ever needs them. And, unfortunately, the main room lay between the barricaded entry and her bedroom. Where are the guards who were patrolling the grounds? She ducked her head against Palito’s chest, breathing in the scent of salt and cedar from his robe. The cool linen matched the chill of her paling cheeks. A third blast breached the perimeter barrier, shattering the outer wall of the manse.

Gielle spun on her heel, spotting a ParDafi male leaning against the counter of a fruit stall. The suffocating humidity had flattened his mane, lessening the impact of his imposing height and broad shoulders. Leonine ParDafi hailed from the desert planet of YelNi, tolerating excessive temperatures known to kill most sentients. From the patches of sweat marking the folds of his sleeveless robe, Lycaon’s sweltering jungles were proving a new challenge to the heat-loving sentient. He leaned forward, resting his weight against his tonat. The stave of toa wood appeared freshly carved, a few drops of hardened sap glittering like amber among the runes.
Snippet from OUBLIETTE by Andria Kennedy: Garnet felt sick with more than just the realization that she was trapped inside of the world in the mirror. The various parts within her warred for her attention even as she drifted through fragmented shadows. There was a part of her that sighed in relief. She was safe in the world she knew, safe from Birchel's machinations, safe from all of the fears that had built through her seventeen years of life. There was nothing to harm her in this world, no one to mock her, or, worse, look on her with pity or disappointment. A part of her was catatonic, unable to process the reality of what had just happened. She had agreed to the switch without invoking terms, allowing Ruby to trap her permanently away from her people, her mother, her kingdom. She’d allowed emotion to overthrow reason and even basic thought, reaping a penalty she couldn't begin to fathom. And deep down, that tiny flickering flame spat in disgust at the other sides of her, demanding that she turn and look outward and figure out a solution to the mess she’d created for herself.

Snippet from OUBLIETTE by Andria Kennedy: Both girls rose to their feet. Garnet clutched the journal behind her skirts in her left hand, her right hand shaking as she extended it towards the mirror. "I invoke our solemn promise," she said, forcing volume into her words. "I release you for this task alone, to return once it is complete. You may tell no one of the truth in any form, be it spoken word or written. You will draw no untoward attention that may cause suspicion to arise. When this night has ended, you will return to this mirror and release me from the other side." "So I solemnly swear," the girl replied, her gaze steady. Garnet's fingers touched the icy glass, melting through it, and the girl's fingers wove between hers, their hands clenched. Garnet looked into the mirror at her own face, bowing her head. "I release you." A gentle pressure tugged her forward, and she stumbled into the mirror.The sweeping darkness crashed around her, and the warm pressure around her hand vanished.

Snippet from OUBLIETTE by Andria Kennedy: The beast was unlike anything she had ever seen before. It was vaguely avian, with a long, drooping beak that ended in a sharp tip and serrated edges to the top and bottom halves. Three eyes perched behind the beak on either side, the back of the head surrounded by a fleshy frill that rose and fell as it studied her. It had a long, sturdy neck that connected to a rounded body covered in thin strands of matted hair rather than feathers. There were two stunted appendages held in front of it that each bore a single claw, the finger-like projections a sickly boil-covered skin. Each leg was as wide as a tree trunk and scaled like a reptile, the toes tipped with lethal talons the length of her palm. Besides the blue eyes, the creature was a mixture of grays and blacks, allowing it to blend seamlessly into the warped forest. The ever-present breeze shifted, bringing the unmistakable stench of carrion. The monster was a predator. She stared in horror as the creature's head twisted on its neck, examining her at impossible angles.I t was a vision from her worst nightmares, and she winced when she noticed the black stains on one claw, the black splashes up one leg.

Snippet from OUBLIETTE by Andria Kennedy: Birchel's men were a little more lively. All three were friends of the prince from the tourney field, having crossed swords with him on a frequent basis. Their favorite topics consisted of reliving past festivals, recounting particular melees where the prince accounted himself against numbers and strengths far beyond his own. Ruby knew Garnet listened to those stories, as much as she tried to appear indifferent. They painted a picture of a man who could conquer an army on his own, likely with his bare hands. It was difficult to imagine that such a man would be capable of gentility. The men only reinforced the image of brutality when they discussed Birchel's latest conquest against the kingdom of Milin. If they were to be believed, the prince led the initial charge, riding in the vanguard, and he slayed Milin's general with a single swing of his sword. Ruby found that a little hard to swallow—bone and sinew were more resistant to steel than stories would have people believe—but it made for a gruesome picture. Milin was a tiny kingdom, half the size of Janus, with little to offer in the way of riches or even crops. The only benefit that Ruby was aware of was its position between another of Wilhelm's conquests and Janus; hardly worth of a bloody battle.

Snippet from OUBLIETTE by Andria Kennedy: Drawing her knees to her chest, she sat beside the brook, studying her reflection in the water. The sky overhead darkened, a stiff wind surging over her from the direction of the coast. If she closed her eyes, she could smell the sea itself, a tang of salt on the air. I could run to the coast, to the ports there. With all of the people that move in and out on their ships, I could disappear forever. I have enough portable jewelry to buy passage on a ship. I could vanish, find somewhere else where no one knows my face. They were the fanciful thoughts of a child, though, and she knew it. Even if she tried, she'd falter within a league, the weight of her responsibility enough to break her back. And Mother…how could I ever explain to Mother why I left? She knew her mother's expression, the quiet disappointment that wounded worse than any blade. Her mother would stand there with that deep sadness, and she would say nothing more than, "I understand, Daughter." Those three words had torn Garnet apart more times than she cared to recount. Because Mother would understand. She knows how weak I am, how frightened. She knows that I'm terrified of being sent to Wilhelm.

Snippet from OUBLIETTE by Andria Kennedy: Garnet glanced around, trying to see the palace with fresh eyes. She might manage to dredge up enough courage to venture into the palace come morning, but no force in the world was going to get her up those stairs with night falling. Her gaze slid over a building to one side of the courtyard, set a little apart from the main palace. The roof was staved in in several places, there were cracked beams, and she could smell the musty stench of old hay from where she stood, but a stable was easy to recognize in any world. Stables have lofts, and grooms are always complaining about the stable boys disappearing into the lofts. Casting one last quick glance around for anything approaching, she bolted for the stable. All of the stalls were empty, and there was nothing to suggest they ever housed anything. Tiny rat-like creatures played in the mounds of straw, but they ignored her. She found a rickety ladder that held her weight and climbed into the loft above. The back corner still had an intact roof, and the hay smelled a little fresher. She couldn't risk a fire, but the enclosed walls provided protection against the wind beginning to howl outside, and she found a moth-eaten saddle blanket that granted a little warmth.

Snippet from OUBLIETTE by Andria Kennedy: She shivered as Nightshade slammed a forefoot into the ground. The hoof alone was large enough to shatter every bone in her leg. If he chose to attack her, even the six men combined wouldn't be sufficient to save her. She took a careful step back, tasting bile in the back of her throat. She had stepped into Garnet's life for less than a day, and already she was experiencing the crawling paranoia and fear Garnet wrapped herself in as a cocoon; it made Ruby ill. You left gaps in your planning, and now you're paying for it. Unless you want to continue to scrabble in the shadows like that pathetic wretch, you'd better figure out how to get to the next stage of the plan, whole and healthy. Nigel put a hand on her arm, his expression drawn. "Your Highness, I know you prefer Nightshade, but, under the circumstances, I think it best for you to ride one of the remounts today. We can trail Nightshade, give him a chance to calm—a chance for both of you to calm." He motioned one of the other guards forward with a dappled mare. "Rain is a steady girl, and she'll give you a chance to settle your mind. You can ride Nightshade again when you've reached your new home."

Snippet from OUBLIETTE by Andria Kennedy: Her slippers made less than a whisper on the stone flags, dry leaves skittering about in a sourceless breeze. In the monochrome world, her sapphire gown was a jolt of color, her golden curls the only source of warmth. She paused at the doors to the ballroom, studying the worn surfaces. One door lay broken, hanging at an angle from rusted hinges, while the other sagged in its frame. This is where the Seneschal stands to announce the guests and nobles as they enter. Her mother's Seneschal was an aging man, stoop-shouldered, with a thin white beard that dripped to almost his knees. He was growing hard of hearing, but her mother couldn't bring herself to replace him. He had a sweet smile, and his unintentional maiming of people's names delighted the court. Her lips curved slightly at the corners. He always calls me Goose, even now that I'm older. She stepped into the room, the silence no longer quite as oppressive. The open room stretched the length of the palace, with enormous columns placed here and there to support the ceiling overhead. Withered vines strangled the columns, and the duplicate of the stained glass mural was shattered beyond recognition. Fragments of glass winked dully from the carpet of dust and debris, the color long since leached away.

Snippet from OUBLIETTE by Andria Kennedy: Garnet had no way to reliably measure the passage of time in this world, but she guessed that it took most of the morning before she felt brave enough to sit up properly and look at the forest passing around her. The bird creature's gait was as smooth as Nightshade's gallop, and its pace seemed tireless. The clawed appendages tucked tight to its chest while it ran, and it held its head curled against its neck, which gave it a comical appearance. There was no avoiding the sickly-sweet smell of rot and blood, but the wind of their passage carried the worst of the stench away, especially when she was sitting. She kept her hands knotted in the hair to hold her balance, and it gave no indication of irritation at the pulling. The tugging inside her chest subsided, so she at least felt certain that she was moving in the direction she needed to reach Ruby. She still wasn't sure the creature wouldn't turn on her at any moment, but as time passed, it grew less likely in her thoughts. There were other monsters moving in the trees around her, though none of them gave chase to her own mount, and she didn't get a clear look at any of them. Some were smaller, darting around the roots of the twisted, curving trunks of the trees, while others were even larger, blotting out any glimpse of the sky through the weeping branches.
