I remain firmly pro-life and strongly believe in protecting innocent human life. That conviction has not changed. However, I also believe legislation must be written with absolute clarity so that its intent cannot be misunderstood or broadly misinterpreted in ways that create fear and confusion. The purpose behind this legislation was to affirm the value and dignity of unborn life — not to suggest that women should face capital punishment or to create uncertainty surrounding difficult medical situations. Unfortunately, portions of the bill's current language have led to significant misunderstandings and differing misinterpretations that distract from the core pro-life message and intent.

In fact in 15 years we rarely ever saw the Bishop in Charlotte. He always cancelled on commencements. He was an ultra conservative who put in place like minded priests which broke up many communities. The Lord sent us two Popes who have corrected course in Charlotte. The community is healing and coming together. A few vocal outliers who think every thought that enters their mind should be shared online long for the recent days gone by where they can try and dictate how people live in their faith. On Wednesday, Jan. 14, before noon, the Walk for Peace Buddhist monks will be traveling along U.S. 21 through the Town of Fort Mill limits as they continue their 120-day, 2,300-mile walk from Texas to Washington, D.C. They will stop at the Anne Springs Close Greenway for lunch before moving on. The Fort Mill Police Department is actively coordinating with the York County Sheriff's Office and the Walk for Peace organizers to ensure a safe walk for the monks. Click the link in our bio for a live map of their journey. We expect significant traffic delays, especially north on U.S. 21. Drivers should avoid the area and consider alternate routes, such as I-77 or the Fort Mill Bypass. As the Walk for Peace makes its way through our community, please keep in mind the following tips for ensuring everyone's safety and not impeding the flow of traffic, and for greeting the monks: -Do not park on the side of the roads near where the monks are walking. -Do not touch the monks, but you can greet them with hands in a prayer position and slight bow. -Taking photographs of the monks is acceptable, though they ask not to be photographed during their meals. Vladeck: It seems to me equal parts striking and unfortunate that, in just six years, we've gone from the court's almost apologetic tone in Rucho v. Common Cause, in which a 5-4 majority held that federal courts couldn't entertain constitutional challenges to partisan gerrymandering even if such behavior is unconstitutional, to the mindset that comes through especially in Justice Alito's concurring opinion in the Texas case - that partisan gerrymandering is a legitimate government enterprise that courts should be in the business of affirmatively protecting. One can think Rucho is right (I don't), and still think severe partisan gerrymandering is an anti-democratic scourge that Congress can and should eliminate.

What happened today was unnecessary, unacceptable and another direct attack on the safety of our community. These actions by ICE, DHS & CBP do not keep ANYONE in Charlotte safe. We will respond calmly and effectively. We have made the decision to cancel all on-site programming until further notice. Even though our on-site programs are paused, ourBRIDGE IS STILL HERE. We will shift 100% of our resources and people-power to ensure that families have the resources they need at home. We will also be working to make sure every immigrant in Charlotte learns their rights by heart and knows where to report and how to ask for help.
Not long from now Donald Trump's Border Patrol surge will roll out of Charlotte to take its terror to another city. It will leave behind destroyed lives and fractured communities, but it will have accomplished very little that meaningfully addresses our nation's immigration issues. We suspect that never was really the goal. What is? Perhaps the president is still hoping immigration can bring him a political win as his approval numbers head lower than even his worst first term levels. Maybe he's hoping for a distraction from the relentless drip of Jeffrey Epstein and economic headlines. None of which is happening. None of which will likely happen. Not because of Charlotte. In fact, just two days in, Operation Charlotte's Web already has failed. With every unnecessarily smashed window, every sneer at due process, every federal agent's smirk at those who are horrified by it all, Donald Trump continues to lose. He loses because this immigration enforcement surge is not really about immigration. If the president really wanted to solve our nation's border issues, he would work toward broader solutions instead of rounding up whomever he can to hit a big number to show Americans. • The Editorial Board

In September, I argued that Democrats needed to embrace what I saw as a pre-Trump strength of the G.O.P.—namely, an ability to build broad coalitions by cultivating a diffuseness of spirit and allowing politicians with different electorates to appeal to those differences. It's at least worth considering the possibility that the end of the Democrats' shutdown firewall, rather than reflecting a troubling lack of unity or disgraceful capitulation, is evidence of that spirit in action.i Strictly speaking, the Democrats didn't vote to end the shutdown. Two handfuls of them did. Many others were very angry about it. There's a world in which both these positions-and their constituencies—can coexist.
But even from a strictly political perspective, the letter doesn't really make sense. Public safety isn't a winning issue for Republicans in Charlotte - at least not right now. At first, it seemed like concerns about safety might give this year's GOP candidates a rare boost in the state's largest city. But voters reelected the mayor and all four city council at-large members by comfortable margins in what was the highest turnout for an odd-numbered election year in at least a decade. In Charlotte City Council District 6, Democrat Kimberly Owens easily defeated Republican Krista Bokhari, becoming the first Democrat to ever represent that seat. Bokhari's campaign was heavily centered around crime and safety, and she was supportive of sending the National Guard to Charlotte.
Ironically, none of the congressmen who signed the letter represent uptown Charlotte, and only one of them represents Mecklenburg County at all. The 9th Congressional District, which is represented by Harris, includes a southeastern portion of the county. But Harrigan's district doesn't come closer than Lincoln County, while Edwards and his western North Carolina district are three counties away. If you're a voter in any of these districts, you're probably wondering: "Why is my congressman spending time on this instead of what's affecting my community?"

There are about 138,500 SNAP participants in Mecklenburg County. The federal issuance for SNAP benefits totals about $2-million per month in Mecklenburg County, or about $175 per participant per month. While Mecklenburg County cannot supplement that level of funding, leaders hope these measures will help mitigate the immediate impact while awaiting a resolution at the federal level.
