That swirl of my elegant black dress on the ballroom floor as you twirled me into a trance.
"many years later I don't remember your name and yet regret lingers" After 80, with more history than future I think back on the free luv days of my youth and total joy with lovers of the moment whose name I may never have known
The heart remembers.
I’ve read this with and without the title being the beginning of the poem and there is incredible nuance either way.
The restraint here is stunning -- the way memory fades while regret persists feels absolutely true.
Beautiful. It’s really tough to write a short poem full of the universe of longing. Reminds me of Dickinson in that her cramped small surfaces simultaneously concealed and revealed an ocean of loss and joy
