Black & white photo of a giraffe long neck and head only. The giraffe is chewing on a bone. What is the reason behind that? It is called osteophagia. Bones provide giraffes with the calcium and phosphorous they need for their own body / skeleton. Giraffes are seen often to also chew on antlers, horns, and ivory. It looks strange indeed, but do what they need. I personally enjoy watching these animals doing that. Like this giraffe. The bone fell quite a few times to the ground. For me was then a little challenge with myself, can I capture the falling bone. I was able too. That was my fun while watching this giraffe chewing for over one hour on this bone.

A colossal iceberg floating in the Arctic sea. High as a church tower, the length was about about 200 meters / two soccer fields. This large iceberg was drifting slowly off shore of Greenland. To get the reflection, the boat had to drift along with the iceberg to make no waves. A bit tricky, but we accomplished it.

Overall a calm and serene atmosphere came through the morning light. Did you know that scientists can extract DNA from just a polar bear’s footprint in the ground? Incredible! With their powerful hind legs, lions can jump approximately 12-13 meters / 40-45 feet. This is quite a distance. We should not underestimate it. Nevertheless, this lioness did not jump. After a little while, she relaxed to continue her routine, sleeping! Facts about lions: Lions do tiptoe when hunting. While on the prowl, their heels won’t touch the ground. Of course, the lionesses stalk silently. Their prey should not hear them. Female lions are the primary hunters. Only with larger prey, the male lions will help. Young lions start to help hunting when they are about one year of age. Lions sleep approximately 20 hours a day, especially after a meal. Undoubtedly, in the wild live not as many lions as we may think. Approximately 23,000 lions are roaming in the wild. Lions do climb trees as the leopards do.

A lioness jaw comes from the left into the picture. This lioness was eating with her pride on an elephant carcass. That time was a dreadful draught in Southern Africa, many animals have suffered or died because of no food or water. The predators of Africa, including vultures had a feast.
