That is, clicking e.g. <a href="/index.html"> still sends me to mysite.com/ instead of mysite.com/index.html. So it seems... possible?

Yes, I think so. The common patterns looks to have the .html example docs.wisp.place/redirects
this should just be the cleanurl setting right? im not sure whats missing
